Dear Fabius Cunctator:
Thanks to our country's "wonderful" public schools, I never studied Latin, although I learned a little in church! The first sentence looks like "whoever desires peace prepares for war", but what does the rest of your Latin sign-off quote mean?

Steve Z:
Here is the full translation, and the wisdom of this is just as valid today as it was when Vegetius wrote it over 1,700 years ago:
"Therefore, he who desires peace must prepare for war; he who desires victory must train his troops diligently; he who hopes for success must fight on principle, not by chance. NO ONE DARES TO OFFEND OR INSULT A POWER WHICH IS KNOWN TO BE SUPERIOR IF IT DECIDES TO FIGHT."
Note the last part - in so many words, no one wants to mess with the big boy on the block, because he knows he will get his head smashed in, if the big boy decides to fight. Too bad we do not really adhere to that maxim.
Yes, the truth will set us free......hopefully it will keep us free.

Thank you, Fabius Cunctator, for clearing that up. Sounds like Teddy Roosevelt's "Speak softly and carry a big stick!"
By the way, since you're from Florida, are SBVT planning to run ads there? _________________ The traitor will crater! |

Steve Z,
It's a great quote, and one which stuck with me since I discovered Vegetius some years back in the Marine Corps Association bookstore in Quantico (3-volume series on military writers, including Sun Tzu, Jomini, etc. )
As far as I know, there are no ads planned for Florida, but there is certainly a lot of talk about SBVT, a lot of it being whining by the lefties in the press here. The local papers, the Ft Lauderdale Sun Sentinel and Miami Herald, are for the most part leftist rags, I guess, for the New Yorker transplants who miss all the lies fit to print of the NY Times.
I do a lot of one-on-one with people here, most recently with an older woman (a friend of my fiance) who knows I am a Marine officer and asked me what I thought about this "hoopla" with the Swift Vets. I took about 20 minutes to calmly and meticulously explain the issue with her. By the time I was finished, she was disgusted with Kerry - she was a toss up between Kerry and W. I also threw in the matter of Bush being trashed for months by DNC-supported 527s and not dignifying their BS with a response, and contrasting that with Kerry's most recent bedwetting over the matter.
E-mail and posting are great, but each of us has a circle of influence, and if each of us can reach that circle, one-on-one, doing what I did, then it will spread, like ripples in a pond, as those whom we reached, pass it on to their circle.
Simple concept, but I have put a few operations out of business doing that.
Saludos de la Republica Popular de Florida del Sur!
