That is one of those urban legends. Laughing

The Chicago never fired a shot on this occassion.

I was actually involved in this. We were locked on the aircraft both coming and going, but were not given permission to fire.

The reason given was that due to the heavy congestion of ships between us and the Higbee the booster of the Talos missle had a high possibilty of hitting one of those ships down range.

I know it sounds crazy but the fact is they (the brass) were correct in that assessment. The chances may have been small but they could not take the chance and passed the assignment on to one of the other ships.

Saw the Higbee in Subic (I think) after the incident and it was a miracle that the casualties were so minimal.

Well, if I'm reading the instructions correctly, I'm supposed to list my service contributions in order to verify my rights to post in the Vets Only forum. This is my attempt to comply.

I served as an MP at Fort Shafter (I know, I know) from '80 to '84. But, hey, lemme tell you, those killer surfing waves really should require extra hazardous duty pay!

But my husband's duty more than anything gives me the right to post anywhere I darned well please Smile

You see, he was not only in Desert Storm, but he was also one of the Marines who was sent in to Somalia for Black Hawk Down. He was on a Mardette unit, a sniper. I have only really bad things to say about Clinton, so don't ask me for an unbiased opinion there. My husband refuses to talk about it, so I have to do the talking for him. He still carries deep resentment about what our government did that day.

I served from 1988 to 1990 as a Midshipman at Annapolis before an honorable medical discharge ended my naval career against my will. I served on the USS Coral Sea Aircraft carrier in the Med during the summer of 1989 and on the USS Boston sub for a week in 1990, earned my airborne and scuba quals, and twisted my ankle in wrestling practice once, but I didn't ask for or get a purple heart for it, so I guess I have no claim to any hero status.

Viet Nam '69-'70 25th I.D. 3/4 Cav A Troop. I was 38 Yankee, 38 Delta, and 38 Tango Charlie when I left the field. 11 months "on line". Dont remember any atrocities committed by our troops in that time. Did not approve of the "democrats war", but I feel like I served with honor. I am not Fonda Jane nor am I fonda John. They are the same in my book. The friends that I lost over there do not deserve to be called the names they were called by these two traitors. John Kerry was against the war before he went to Viet Nam. "Why did he bother to go in the first place"??? Because his idol John Kennedy was in the Navy. HE WENT TO FAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!![/u]
