Is it true that kerry served on the gridley for a year during his "first tour" and his "second tour" was the 4 months cut short due to injuries? |

It is my understanding from reading Unfit for Command that you are correct. |

Yes, Somalia. Most of that time was spent off the California coast, at port in Hawaii and Australia, and cruising to/from the western Pacific. Total time spent off the coast of Vietnam (about 50 miles) was somewhere between 5 and 7 weeks. There is a Gridley alumni site out there with more details, or read Unfit for Command or Tour of Duty. _________________ -- Bill in Seattle |

13 months from reporting to Gridley (8 Jun '67) to leaving (20 Jul '68)
However, only something like 7 weeks of the Gridley WESTPAC tour was in VietNam waters
The Gridley departed the US on the WESTPAC tour 9 Feb '68 and set sail for return to US 27 May '68 |

"cut short due to injuries"
That conjurs up images of an unconusous soldier being carried on a strecther with plasma bottles, medic, etc.
Somehow I can't see the 3 scratches Kerry recieved rising to the level of an injury, but thanks for the laugh! _________________ A Grunt

A previous thread here indicated that the Gridley was off the coast of Viet Nam for 2 weeks while Kerry was aboard. Confirmation available? That makes 2 weeks for his first "tour", and 4 months for his second "tour". _________________ Fix the problem, not the blame.
