Anyone seen the WaPo article as of 11pm Mon nite? Now the handwriting "expert" Marcel Matley has backed off his supporting the CBS docs.

Yesterday, USA Today said that it had independently obtained copies of the documents "from a person with knowledge of Texas Air National Guard operations" who declined to be named "for fear of retaliation.".....snip.

Seeya, Dan. Wouldn't wanna beeya right now.

The whole concept of being an "expert" is inviolate credibility. Even Dem experts are backing off this like they have been handling something radioactive. Being wrong on this one will kill a career, graveyard dead.

Unnamed is probably Strong, or Heldt.

I saw a mention in my surfing, of Fox having the docs on or before Feb 14, 04, and that Heldt was shopping the docs around in Feb,
but serious MEGO has set in.
Here's Heldt from Sept 27, 2000 (bottom of page date)

There's a CNBC poll on whether the memos are fake or not. So far it's

25% Authentic
59% Fake
16% I don't care

Go take the poll

It looks like the momentum is on the side of truth, regardless of whether you're a Republican or Democrat, Conservative or Liberal.

Looks like the looney left is now down to 25% of the CNN population. Identified liberals in this country are at 19%. The 16% who don't care are the queazy about Kerry crowd. The good news is that almost 60% of the country appear to have maintained their sense of reason and independent thought.

The poll looks good, but, did I not read that Staudt said there was NOT a waiting list for TANG at that time? If that's true, then this article shows more MSM bias again. (Whut a 'sprise!) Seems like maybe there is more debunking to do. Maybe someone can run this (waiting list issue) down & get another wave of e-mails going...

Your view of the Killian memos?

CBS News is under pressure for stories based on documents that the network said it had been told were taken from Col. Jerry Killian's personal files.

In a closely contested presidential election, issues are taking a back seat to things like fonts, superscripts and proportional spacing.

At issue are memos that CBS News said were obtained from "unimpeachable sources." The documents were consistent with elements of what's long been known about President Bush's Vietnam-era military service, such as the fact Bush leapfrogged over other candidates for a coveted place in the Texas Air National Guard.

But doubts have been cast over the authenticity of the documents. The Washington Post reported today that the lead expert retained by CBS News to examine the memos from Bush's former squadron commander said he examined only the late officer's signature and made no attempt to authenticate the documents themselves.

What's your view of the Killian memos regarding George W. Bush's service in the National Guard? Vote in our poll and then e-mail your thoughts to the team.

Yesterday on Fox and Friends, Col. Lively, the head of operations of the TANG in 1972-73, said there was not a waiting list for the TANG, just for the National Guard.

Brit Hume just had on that Killians typist said that the memos are fake that she didn't type them, never saw them BUT they represent sentiments that Killian and others had expressed.

For those who'll no doubt start the Googling process, her name is evidently Marian Carr Knox

and it's being reported by the Dallas News

Marian Carr Knox, who worked from 1956 to 1979 at Ellington Air Force Base in Houston, said she prided herself on meticulous typing, and the memos first disclosed by CBS News last week were not her work.

“These are not real,” she told The Dallas Morning News after examining copies of the disputed memos for the first time. “They’re not what I typed, and I would have typed them for him.”

OK. That should be that.

Quote:
She said she did not recall typing the memos reported by CBS News, though she said they accurately reflect the viewpoints of Lt. Col. Killian and documents that would have been in the personal file. Also, she could not say whether the CBS documents corresponded memo for memo with that file.

“The information in here was correct, but it was picked up from the real ones,” she said.

Well, that's a bit strange. A professional secretary would be more likely to say "None of your business -- these are personal" -- unless

Quote:
Mrs. Knox, 86, who spoke with precise recollection about dates, people and events, said she is not a supporter of Mr. Bush, who she deemed “unfit for office” and “selected, not elected.”

So here's this poor woman who's seen all this swirling about for the last 4 years and just now comes forward to say 'even though the content is wrong, the story is right.' I wonder whether they'll let her shake Dan Rather's hand?

Brit Hume also just reported that one of Danny' Boy's experts apparently got his expertise by being a typewriter repairman in the 70's and the other got his start by doing "personality" and "character" analysis based upon the subjects handwriting. Sort of like reading bumps on the head. Speaking of bumps on the head has anyone checked Danny for a concussion?

apparently the typist claims she had a nifty expensive typewriter with the superscript, and Killian did have a CYA file that she typed for him. But didn't type these.

Now Drudge is publishing an interview:

http://www.drudgereport.com/bushtang.htm

Quote:
Knox has been following the story since last week when the 60 MINUTES II broadcast aired, and on Friday she contacted the HOUSTON CHRONICLE wanting to tell her side of the story. Since then the DALLAS MORNING NEWS has also contacted her.

"What really hecked me off was when it was somebody on TV, associated with the White House, who said that all of this information was lies. And I got excited at the time because I knew that I had typed documents with this information because a person like Bush stood out from the others -- because of his association with his father."

I pity Mrs. Knox. People are going to descend on her like a ton of bricks.

Did anyone ask her what type of typewriter she was using? I've seen and heard it said it was an old Olympia with Courier 10 monospace non-proportional font.

Regarding the typewriter:

Quote:
She said the typeface on the documents did not match either of the two typewriters that she used during her time at the Guard. She identified those machines as a mechanical Olympia, which was replaced by an IBM Selectric in the early 1970s.

She spoke fondly of the Olympia machine, which she said had a key with the “th” superscript character that was the focus of much debate in the CBS memos. Experts have said that the Selectric, and mechanical typewriters such as the Olympia, could not produce proportional spacing, found in the disputed documents.

But it doesn't matter. The new tact is 'yes they're forgeries but it doesn't matter because the content is right. More or less.'
