(r)BS - that's a great map! Where'd you get it?

I've been chasing smaller maps to get lat/long coords for the points - but could not find a map with the VQ3594 coordinate.

WQ 798666 is about 8d 45m N, 105 d 44m E
VQ 6478 is about 8d 50m N, 104d 40m E
VQ 3594 (couldn't find a map with it on)

It looks to me like poseidon's calculations for straight-line distances are correct, RBS is about right with the actual course to avoid grounding taken into consideration.

Sounds like Chief is putting together a time line. Wonder why he would do that? Wink

(b) VQ 64 78
(c) WQ 798 666

Distance A to B: Approx 33 km
Distance B to C: Approx 90 km {Air Route}
Distance B to C: Approx 150 km (via sea around Ca Mau)

Distance C to A: A-B plus B-C ... your choice of route

Be it far from me to question a spook chief's reading of
co-ordinates from message traffic ... how-some-ever

Who the hell was at these widely separated locations?

Great call, Bob!

I boo boo'd. Embarassed The (C) coordinates should be VQ 995 770.

That's what I get for typing late at night.

(a) = USCGC SPENCER

(b) = USS WASHTENAW COUNTY (LST-1166)

(c) = mine incident on 13 Mar 69

There is an extremely good zoom-able (down to almost village level) map of South Viet Nam at
http://www.nexus.net/~911gfx/SVNmap.html
It is considerably more detailed than the ones above.
Hope this helps.

Chief,

In that case, B-C as the crow flies is about 40k (just by counting grid squares), A-C is about B-C + 33k. You'd have to pass pretty close to B to get from C to A, unless you are in a helo.

Whew! For a minute there I thought all Chiefs were infallible!

Revised "CHART" as we used to say in the black shoe Navy

... ... ...
........ USCGC Spencer WHEC 36 .......... Washtenaw County LST 1166 ...

Revised distances:

Distance A to B: Approximately 33 km
Distance B to C: Approximately 45 km
Distance C to A: Approximately 78 km

Route from B to C takes into account the jog south to "Square Bay"

Yup. That's where that one came from. Just that the size of the
image needed to show all three locations had to be such that
river/klong/village details get "ooh so tiny" ya caint see em.

Ah, hell no! I'm still infallible -- I just gotta get the J.O.'s in line Wink

This is really great work (as usual).

This seems to fit nicely with the other thread I posted for the timeline on the 13 March 1969 incident. Link here: Reconstruction Timeline

We're getting there.

Chief, the "captins mast" person is in the "real estate" land ect.

stuff and I have just sent the post to a survey co. here

they have computers ect. that can do much on distance ect.

"Treasea" there has them now, by fax , they will need to

find a vet to sign on with in their office , I'm sure they can

help.

nut case

ps they may have a "plementer" which is a thing you roll along the
river ect. and gives the distace from the little roller thingey .

CM,

The real estate tool is a "planimeter", and as far as I know it measures area, not distance. I've got a little map ruler which you roll down a course and it gives you distance. But it works much better on paper than it does on a glass terminal face! Wink

I think for Chief's purposes, the distances he has are accurate enough. He'll be estimating the speed of the vessel to probably +-10% accuracy at best; he doesn't need distances accurate to the nearest 100 m.

No sense in burning more energy on the task than is needed. Let's call this one closed.

Mike
