Two rescue tugs are enroute to the stricken Canadian submarine, HMCS Chicoutimi, stranded in the North Atlantic. However, high seas and gale-force winds means there may not be a chance to attach a tow line to the drifting vessel until Friday.

These guys are in a bad way. Subs are not designed for the surface. They need to submerge in bad weather. This is made worse by the fact that they have no engines or heat.
On a personal note, I live on the border with Canada; 10 to 15% of the people I work with every day are commuter Canadians. The North Atlantic is a bad place to be in a storm even on a sound ship, this vessel isn't seaworthy. |

Perhaps you have not been in the N Atlantic this time of year in the area where the sub was floundering - Seas are very heavy.If you had then you would understand. We should not critisize their efforts - as seamen I will bet they wewe doing their best to save their mates as we would do. |
No I think I'll critisize. For what? The first 24 hours they said the fire was "minor", eventually they admitted it was a major fire. By "they" I mean the Canadian Govt. I meant no disrespect to the Canadian sailors on that boat. It just sounds suspicious to me the way they downplayed the whole thing. I'd be less suspicious if the weapons system involved wasnt so controversial. Remember the Kursk?
Do I think politicians would put sailors at risk to save their own skins? Yeah I do !..........................Rich

This is incredible. They have 1 dead, 2 hospitalized, and it'll take several more days to tow the stricken sub into port. This thing isn't even over and the politicians have begun the finger pointing. I suppose politicians and bureaucrats are the same everywhere.
HMS Montrose currently has the sub, HMCS Chicoutimi, in tow and they have begun the 100+ mile journey to port.
Four British ships, an Irish vessel and a U.S. submarine support ship participated in this rescue.
