Me too. I'm a Born Again, Spirit Filled (yes, tongue talkin') Roman Catholic.
Like so many others, I was also indoctrinated in the Democratic Party. A picture of Roosevelt was hung right next to the Sacred Heart.
Owing to the working class roots of the Catholic Church in the USA old traditions die hard. Catholics are, however, waking up to the choices being presented. The line in the sand has become the abortion issue, and the concept of gay marriage.
I have learned to be patient with my brothers and sisters in the Faith, and to trust in the Holy Spirit to convict those who are still sleeping. (Thus maintaining our 501(c)3 status)
By the way, I must say that we do not deify Mary and the Saints. The primary function of these entities is to serve as intercessors. Every church I know of has a prayer warrior group who serve as intercessors. When you have a prayer need, you go to these people and they interceed for you. It doesn't mean that you can't pray to God directly, it just means that the intercessors have developed the favor of God by virtue of their life of prayer. When they interceed, things happen in Heaven. Now, who better to have as an intercessor than Mary and the Holy Saints who we believe can hear and respond to our prayer requests. We simpy ask them to pray for us.
I dearly hope that this brief explanation clarifies what we believe about the Saints. There are many misunderstandings. _________________ ETN2 PTF2 (Littlecreek Underwater Demolition Unit 2 1963)

The abortion issue is the big one for me. 95% of my family is Roman Catholic, and everyone of us (except for my crazy aunt who thinks we're still living in the 50's, and practically worships John Kerry) will be voting for Bush. IMHO, if a man cannot respect life at its most critical stage, I don't want him running this country. Kerry actually did an interview with one of the local (Minneapolis/St. Paul) TV stations, and was asked a question about... if one of his daughters were thinking about having an abortion.. what would he say to them. I don't have the direct quote (yet) but his answer was something like.. He couldn't tell them not to do it. I've e-mailed the anchor who did the interview, and hopefully he can tell me/show me exactly what was said.
So yes, Jim, you're right.. that is one of the lines in the sand. The gay marriage thing.. I'm kind of torn on.. 2 of my good friends just happen to be lesbians. They also had what they called a wedding.. even though it's not legal, and they're okay with that. Basically, it was a 'committment' ceremony. My husband was the Best Man. Now.. I love my friends dearly... They know how I feel about things like this... I know how they feel... and we've come to a happy medium of sorts. They will also be voting for Bush this year.. They know they're as close to married as they're going to get, and they accept it. Like I said.. being this close to a situation like that, I'm torn.
The part about Mary and the Saints.. can I use that?? That's the best way I've seen that explained in a long time!
I see this has turned into a rant again.. ~LOL~ I need to learn how to control myself!
