John Kerry found an opportunity last night to praise the Constitution of the United States. Perhaps he should read it before he talks about it. If he has read it he certainly doesn't show it. Last night Kerry said that we have "An unbelievable Constitution with rights that we afford people."
Rights that we afford people? Just who is the "we" he's talking about? If there is a great and glorious "we" out there that "affords" people their rights, then doesn't it stand to reason that that great and glorious "we" can un-afford those rights when the great "we" decides it's appropriate?
And just how do you define "afford?" The dictionary defines the word as "to make available, to provide." So now we know that John Kerry believes that our rights are provided to us by some "we" out there. The great "we" made those rights available to us. How grand. How grateful we are to the grand Imperial We.
Since most Americans were educated in government schools, I don't expect a lot of people to realize this; but our rights; our rights to freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly ... all of our rights were not given to us by our Constitution or by any "we" out there. The people who founded our country and wrote our Constitution felt that these rights belonged to us by virtue of our very existence. The rights were "inalienable," not subject to being recalled by the Imperial We. The Constitution was written to protect those rights, not to grant them. The Constitution was written and ratified by the people to establish a government and to grant certain rights to government, not the other way around. The Constitution specifically says that all rights not granted to government by the people are reserved by the people. We are the "we" .. and we are the ones who empowered government, not the other way around.
John Kerry is not the first president to talk about the Constitution giving us our rights. Bill Clinton was of the same mind. He once talked of the Constitution giving Americans the rights they hold dear. This is a fundamental fault of liberalism. Liberals like John Kerry believe that America is great because of government. They believe that our rights flow from government. To believe that rights flow from government is to believe that these rights can be withheld by government. To liberals America is government, and the people exist merely to serve through the confiscation of their labor.

Good post.
Our inalienable rights are endowed to us by our Creator. I guess claiming that we have these rights by reason of our existence is another way of saying that. But I prefer the reference to God.
Certainly our rights are not given to us by government as liberals seem to believe. _________________ "And no pair has been more wrong, more loudly, more often, than the two Senators from Massachusetts, Ted Kennedy and John Kerry"

Well, lordy--if our rights are guaranteed by our EXISTENCE, maybe we ought to start extending them, now that we know, to apes and ants and armadillos . . . and treesnflowersngroceries . . . |

First post, so bear with me.
From the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence
"We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, and that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness- That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men , deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed...".
Seems Kerry has things all backwards. We afford the Politicians their "just Powers".
Thanks Swiftees. Rock on! |

I think even more telling was the word "unbelievable" he used in the quote. He not only thinks the Constitution affords us our rights but it is also unbelievable. _________________ 6 Year Navy |

Great posts. We all need to step back from the rhetoric and THINK about what we KNOW. Great examples of Kerry's political core that runs counter to what America is all about.
When I don't like what Kerry says and don't quite know why, I can look to the Constitution and other documents that the founding fathers wrote when establishing our country.
I guess Kerry never read or studied any of these documents.
I encourage you to send your thoughts and essays to the media folks. And to all in your address book. Do we have your permission to forward it on as well? Thanks. CTW

Destroying the constitution is the only way liberals can govern. Our forefathers were brilliant in it's writing, but we have been sloppy in the way we have allowed it to be subjicated by those who want to destroy the country ( liberals) |

Rights that we afford people? Just who is the "we" he's talking about? |
This is an excellent observation. Kerry's ideology is imperious. He should have spoken of "an unbelievable Constitution of the people, by the people, and for the people that guarantees inalienable rights of the people."
Has anyone picked up on his saying that he believes abortion is a Constitutional right? (Umm...what passage in the Constitution says that, exactly?) That scares the daylights out of me....will euthanasia one day be declared a "Constitutional right"?
It was quite interesting that George Bush explained -- for a second time -- that he disagrees with abortion because he believes in creating a "culture of life" (as opposed to the obvious "culture of death" proposed by Kerry)?
Almost sounds like the Jewish toast "L'Chaim" ("To life"). Hmmm...maybe Bush is just a puppet to those dastardly, life-loving, morals-are-not-relative Neocons, eh?

If Kerry ever bothered to actually read the Constitution, he would have seen that it is a document outlining the powers and responsibilities of government granted to it BY THE JUST CONSENT OF THE GOVERNED! John Adams and others had a justified fear of a strong central government, so they added the Bill of Rights, outlining some, but not all of the rights of citizens. The Constitution gives us nothing, it is an instrument by which we give LIMITED powers to the government.
A judge who understands this is a strict constructionalist and this is why it is so important that Kerry is not elected. Kerry prefers judges who think the government controls and awards rights to the people. |
