Hannaford's has reversed their decision!
Here's the announcement on their website:
Quote: | Hannaford's position on political broadcast
Hannaford has indicated that following its announcement yesterday that it had pulled its advertising from WGME (Portland, ME), based on the stations plans to air a controversial political program, it had reversed its decision.
"We recognize that WGME has been placed in an untenable position," corporate spokesperson Caren Epstein said. "It was never our intention to politicize this issue even more by our action. Hannaford is in the supermarket business, not the political business," she said. "We make our media buying decisions based on our customer demographic and WGME is one of the stations in the market that reaches our customers." |
Now let's hope this can spread!

Paul,
The program in question is being shown by stations owned by Sinclair Broadcasting. These are "airwave" transmissions, not satellite TV channels. The only station I found in California owned by Sinclair is up in Sacramento. Nothing in Southern California. Las Vegas has a station too. These are the only two west of the Rockies. If you really want to see the video, purchase a copy from their web site. It's an excellent production. Station info can be found at:
http://sbgweb2.sbgnet.com/business/television.shtml
You can purchase the video from:
http://www.stolenhonor.com/
It's 42 minutes long and they want 20 bucks for either the DVD or VHS. Don't know delivery time. I ordered pre-production. |

KOVR 13 in Sacramento will be airing the program, providing the lefties here don't destroy the station first. _________________ "And no pair has been more wrong, more loudly, more often, than the two Senators from Massachusetts, Ted Kennedy and John Kerry"

I just searched the Hannaford web site and I couldn't find the article listed in this thread. Where did this statement come from? _________________ Prophets have honour all over the Earth,

The article is on the Portland Press Herald site:
http://pressherald.mainetoday.com/news/local/041015wgme.shtml
The announcement from Hannaford's that they reversed their decision is on their website.
I called the store manager back and said thank you, I'm now a customer again. He said he had passed my comments along and they were very concerned. Also said they'll now get deluged with calls from the other side... at which I said that's why Hannaford's shouldn't get into it at all. They do a great job selling groceries

You should call your local station or check their website. It will air here on Sat, 10/23 at 8 but I've seen other days and times in other markets.

Another approach is to have an investigative reporter visit the companies to determine the motivation to pull their ads. Knowing Kerry operatives these businesses could have been threatened. If Kerry operatives are bold enough to threaten Sinclair I suspect they will easily place similar pressure on the local merchant. If any threat has been made it should be publicized so America knows the politician Kerry.
If the advertisers pulled them to show support for Kerry then I agree a boycott is one means of redress.

Unfortunately I live in the Chicago area, and the show will not be aired here, however, I have read the many suggestions about boycotting the stores that pull their ad. A boycott is very personal, between you, and the store, I feel that picketing the sotres would get even more attention to the situation, more press, and lets face it, the more free press that we can get to draw attention to the swifties, and all their hard work, the better. _________________ If your Gonna Be One...Be a BIG RED ONE

A good point, JK! I was assuming that the "pressure" to pull advertising was the same as the "pressure" I exerted by pulling my support for their business. There are other kinds of pressure that fall way outside the bounds and are NOT individual acts/expressions. No business wants to see half of their business dry up over a one hour program, though, so I hope the profit motive succeeds even in cases where the threats could have crossed the line.
I really hate how this is being twisted into a political message (demanding equal time). It's as much a protected news story as all the other stuff we get force-fed and more than most. It is galling how the lies and double standards from Dem. officials are so blatant and frequent that we almost don't notice them anymore. Apologies to the Dems involved here, I'm trying not to sweep with a wide brush. I sincerely hope you get your party back soon! And nominate a decent candidate so the contest is what it should be about, and the competition makes America stronger, not weaker. [getting off soap box]
