That IS an excellent resource and thanks for posting the link.
One thing I'm curious about though. I know that Cat Lo and Vung Tau are geographically close, but I don't see Cat Lo referenced on that map. Am I overlooking it, or is it, indeed, not marked?
If not, can anyone place it with reference to any of the features that the map does display?

It is excellent. I've been using it as a resource for several years. That, and the actual maps, which are available.
Because of the detail, and the limitations of viewing it on the net, it can be difficult to know if what you are looking at is what you want sometimes. The detail is so up close, if you don't see something familiar, you don't know if you have the correct section. Then it's clicking back and forth, from section to section . . . .
I haven't seen anything better than this on the net, but then again, I haven't checked.
Don't know about Cat Lo/Vung Tau, other than they are close, as you say. It could just be that Cat Lo isn't listed on the map.

Cat Lo....I don't know about it ....but ChuLai a large Army and Marine base with large airfield was named ChuLai by the americans and was/is not called by that name by vietnamese, it was never ChuLai before the US build up or since. So perhaps Cat Lo is a similar situation.

Oh Contrare!! The following image of the entrance was taken in the year 2002.

The current Vietnamese govenment has very aggressive plans to develop the
area as the "Dung Quat Bay Industrial Park" including expansion of the airfield
into "Chu Lai International Airport"

Since "Chu Lai" is the Mandarin Chinese characterization for the family name
of USMC General Victor Krulak, who first chose the area around Dung Quat
Bay for a Marine airfield, this may be just and fitting {grin}

I had read the story of the naming of ChuLai before but had forgotten the exact details....I had read several accounts of veterans that had returned to the area and at the time of their visits the governments officals had not gotten around to recognizing the benefits of refering to the area by the american name...
nice to see they are coming around to a few of the advantages of capitialism....  $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
they always were good at separating us from our dollars... 
Having been an avid sailor prior to being drafted and sailed appox 10,000 ocean miles...I was very fortunate to have been located at ChuLai,which I always thought would make a beautiful beach resort with it's long cresant shaped beach, and later right on China Beach at the 95th Evac.Hosp......so close as a matter of fact a few NCO hootches were undermined by the surf during a typhoon in the fall of 71

These resourceful guys turned some A4 drop tanks into a nice catamaran!

I remember being in a small group of GIs who were watching the roof of a hootch being torn away and blown off. We didn't even take shelter; we just marveled at the force of the storm. No, we weren't "high", just amazed by nature. |
