Breaking news Oct. 18:

Quote:
Balestrieri, who launched his case earlier this year by filing a heresy complaint in Kerry's home archdiocese of Boston, told EWTN's "World Over" program on Friday that he had received an unusual, indirect communication from the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith regarding the pro-abortion stance.

That communication provides a basis, he said, to declare that any Catholic politician who says he is "personally opposed to abortion, but supports a woman's right to choose," incurs automatic excommunication.

Teddy Kennedy next?

Folks, from what I know of Catholic doctrine, if the statement wasn't from the Pope, speaking Ex Cathedra, it is not a binding official Church position.

Private communications - even from high Church officials - are not the same as Church doctrine.

Hondo,
What you say in general is true.
However, read the entire article, go to the links and check
out the definitions in the glossary. Also visit DeFide.com

This is a beginning that will result in a DECISION!
That is HUGE.
Kerry cannot put the "meow back in the cat".
He is in the public record many times over with his
contrary views to th official CHURCH. Don't forget Sacred Tradition
SEE...

Father Cole wrote, "If a Catholic publicly and obstinately supports the civil right to abortion, knowing that the Church teaches officially against that legislation, he or she commits that heresy envisioned by Can. 751 of the Code [of Canon Law]. Provided that the presumptions of knowledge of the law and penalty and imputability are not rebutted in the
external forum, one is automatically excommunicated ...."

So many people of faith are disturbed and have started to make
that known in a fromal complaint in the church that they will have
to give a formal response.

Nothing is for sure, but is one VERY SERIOUS issue now.
It will have an impact. He cannot "unring the bell".

To compound his own misery he has ramped up speeches about
his faith and religion. As usual he is at odds with the truth.
This is ANOTHER opportunity for people who care to participate and
make a difference.

Let's make it a day of impact and ...
a "debunking" kind of day.

This from PowerLine on the subject:

***********

The Vatican's response is by Father Basil Cole, a Dominican theologian based in Washington, DC, who said he had been assigned to give an unofficial response to the question that Balestrieri had submitted. He answers two questions that Balestrieri had posed, both affirmatively. His letter concludes:

Consequently, if a Catholic publicly and obstinately supports the civil right to abortion, knowing that the Church teaches officially against that legislation, he or she commits that heresy envisioned by Can. 751 of the Code. Provided that the presumptions of knowledge of the law and penalty and imputability are not rebutted in the external forum, one is automatically excommunicated according to Can. 1364, Sec. 1.

Catholic World News says that "[t]he type of excommunication outlined in the new information is called latae sententiae, which means that it occurs automatically and does not require a formal pronouncement by any Church official."

************

I really wouldn't count on anything momentous here.

Whatever the outcome of the decision process the Vatican will not release anything official until after the election. This will not have political impact on this election cycle.

This news simply means that after Kerry loses the election, journalists will jump on Kerry’s political carcass in one of their carrion feeding frenzies, and the whole world will find out what we already know, and media outlets will compete to interview SwiftVets who provide stories that validate the national outcry for John Kerry to be deported to France, the French refuse to accept him and at that time he will also be excommunicated.

T. will carefully keep sharp objects away from him.

Now wonder he has been working the Black Protestant Church circuit lately. Shamefully, if he continues to "ask for your vote" from the pulpit as he did this past Sunday, he will cost the churches he visits their tax-exempt status -- and blame it on Bush.

One assumes that John Kerry is a practicing Catholic...that is, that he goes to Mass every Sunday, goes to Confession on a fairly regular basis, and more or less follows the teachings of the Catholic church.

I think for most Catholics, this will be a stumbling block; John F Kennedy, for all his flaws was unabashedly Catholic and no doubt did not support abortion, and it certainly helped to rally the Catholic vote and get him elected.

Unfortunately, I think Mr. Kerry's brand of Catholicism is more for convenience than out of any genuine belief or regard for the Church's teachings and rituals. If he seeks to try to highlight his faith, in contrast to the President's unashamed Christian faith, in order to court the evangelical vote, he is fighting a losing battle, as most evangelicals don't exactly consider Catholics to be Christians.

At any rate, I don't think the excommunication will affect him personally, as I suspect he usually doesn't go to church regularly. But it might cost him some Catholic votes.

Maria

excommunication is a big deal.

Though any 'formal' announcement may not come from the Vatican until after the election, let's hope the media runs with this today! We need any and all things we can get to keep Kerry on the defensive.
