This is an odd story, from the San Bernardino Sun:
The Pentagon knows exactly where Osama bin Laden is hiding in Pakistan, it just can't get to him, John Lehman, a member of the 9/11 Commission, said Thursday.
Lehman's remarks echoed those made Tuesday by Secretary of State Colin Powell, who said the al-Qaida leader was alive and operating in the western part of Pakistan.
Bin Laden is living in South Waziristan in the Baluchistan Mountains of the Baluchistan region, Lehman told the San Bernardino Sun after delivering a keynote speech on terrorism at Pitzer College in Claremont.
In the interview, Lehman noted, "There is an American presence in the area, but we can't just send in troops. If we did, we could have another Vietnam, and the United States cannot afford that right now."
When pressed on why the United States couldn't send troops into the region to capture the world's No. 1 terrorist, Lehman said the Baluchistan region of the country is filled with militant fundamentalists who do not recognize the legitimacy of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, a close ally of the United States.
"That is a region filled with Taliban and al-Qaida members," he said, acknowledging that Pakistan's security services also are filled with many who agree with bin Laden's beliefs and would aid him if U.S. Special Forces entered the region.
"Look," he said, "Musharraf already has had three assassination attempts on his life. He is trying to comply, but he is surrounded by people who do not agree with him. This is not like Afghanistan, where there was no compliance, and we had to go in.
"We'll get (bin Laden) eventually, just not now."
Asked how bin Laden was surviving, Lehman said he was getting money from outside countries, such as the United Arab Emirates, and high-ranking ministers inside Saudi Arabia.
"He is not a wealthy man," Lehman said. "We ran that information into the ground, and discovered he only receives about $1 million a year from his family's fortune. The rest of what he gets comes from radical sympathizers."
One assumes Lehman has some idea of what he's talking about... but how come we are hearing this from him, and not from someone else in the government?

I trust John Lehman on this. He was a good member of the Reagan administration. If this is true, something needs to be done. We can't continue to wait, especially now. While Bush leads, we can take nothing for granted. Alas, it's a story like this that confirms my worst fears. We won't catch UBL before the election. Damn it! |

Maybe we should begin an email campaign, concerned if it does come out to soon the dems will make stupid accusations about our inability to get him. Rove knows you can bet and they aren't stupid. Please God please give him over. _________________ twicearound |

It's too late now. Of course they would howl if he was caught. Knowing the MSM, they might even be able to spin it against Bush. As I wrote a few days ago, Cofer Black alluded to this in early September. Seven weeks later we're still hoping against hope. |

We seem to go through this UBL frenzy about once a week. UBL is probably no threat to anybody right now. I don't believe he was ever the head of Al Queda, much less now. Capturing or killing UBL will accomplish almost nothing real. Capture or kill the two Zs will be a real accomplishment.
The way the Kerry Kamp has spun it, though, if UBL is captured or killed then the war on terrorism will be over (Kerry has mis-led people into believing that UBL is THE threat), and there will be no need for a strong CIC. And thus, when UBL is captured or killed - according to the Kerry theory, but implied, not spoken - we can get back to terrorists just being a nusance, and we can step down from the war on terror - thus saving Kerry from having to live up to his promises of alliances, 40,000 more troops, etc., etc. Why if the war on terror is over, Kerry can divert that money to all those glorious programs that he cannot fund.
From my viewpoint, we just need UBL to disappear quietly into the sunset, and to never be heard from again.

Lehman could really help the effort by going on talk shows this week and talking to us about Kerry's forged silver star citation! Now that is a very helpful "October surprise" Lehman knows firsthand about! |

If they get UBL this close to the election you might be surprised at how many people will say that Bush and Co. had him all along and trotted him out just to win. Many people will buy into that and get angry at Bush. It's better that UBL stay in his black hole for the time being. |

If anyone except JFK and little wimp thing UBL will end Terror, ask Spain why they almost lost their SUPREME court the other day.
After all as I remember, did'nt they pull their troops out so they would not have to worry about being attact anymore?

They need to hit every cave opening with one of those bombs we used early on, you know--the ones that sucked the air out of them, an awesome bomb--we may get lucky. _________________ Never Ever Give Up
