Bush's actions alarm billionaire activist

Philanthropist George Soros says recognizing America may be wrong is a foundation of open society.

Just because terrorists are evil does not mean the United States' actions to defeat them have been good, billionaire philanthropist George Soros said Friday in Des Moines.

"Recognizing that we may be wrong is the foundation of open society," Soros told about 750 people in a speech at Drake University's Sheslow Auditorium.

Soros said he has heard alarm bells ringing over the Bush administration's path since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

"President Bush silenced all opposition by calling it unpatriotic," Soros said. By stifling dissent, Bush has violated the very principles of full and fair debate that are essential to a democratic society, he said.

The global sentiment of sympathy directed at the United States after Sept. 11 has been replaced by "equally widespread resentment," he said. Re-electing the president would not help the United States regain the confidence of the world, Soros said.

Soros, whose network of philanthropic organizations has spent $450 million annually in an effort to promote the values of democracy, is traveling the country on a one-month campaign to focus voters' attention on the war in Iraq and American foreign policy. Des Moines was one of 12 cities on his tour.

Soros said he does not normally take an active role in partisan politics but "these are not normal times."

"There is a fundamental flaw in the president's way of thinking," Soros said.

David James, spokesman for the Republican National Committee, said that Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry's public embrace of Soros shows desperation and that Soros' appearance in Des Moines indicates that he is worried about Kerry's future.

"The only explanation for the Daddy Warbucks of the Democratic Party, George Soros, to step out from behind his curtain to appear here in Iowa 11 days before the election is his obvious concern for his investment in John Kerry," James said.

Soros said his experience in fostering democracy has showed him that democracy cannot be imposed by military means.

"The war in Iraq was misconceived from start to finish - if it has a finish," Soros said.

In an interview after his speech, Soros said that although he has not had contact with Kerry since Christmas 2001, he is confident Kerry is more capable of getting U.S. troops out of Iraq.

Soros said getting out of Iraq won't be easy for Kerry "because we are caught in a quagmire."

He is an evil POS. Wonder what it is like for two POS's to embrace? No, I don't.

Anybody else notice how Soros' "talking points" seem like they were scripted in Europe? It's almost like BBC, and the French and German newspapers were speaking through him.
