Quote: | Washington Post backs John Kerry for president
55 minutes ago Politics - AFP
WASHINGTON (AFP) - The Washington Post endorsed John Kerry (news - web sites) for president in an editorial, saying the choice was not an easy one but that President George W. Bush (news - web sites) had not earned a second term in office.
"On balance... we believe Mr Kerry, with his promise of resoluteness tempered by wisdom and open-mindedness, has staked a stronger claim on the nation's trust to lead for the next four years," the Post said.
The president's record "particularly in foreign affairs, can't be judged with a simple aye or nay," the influential daily said, lauding him for rallying the nation view after September 11, transforming Afghanistan (news - web sites) and "beginning to reshape a Middle East policy too long centered on accommodating friendly dictators."
But the Post faulted Bush for exaggerating intelligence about the threat posed by Saddam Hussein (news - web sites), alienating allies unnecessarily and ignoring advice on post-war conditions in Iraq (news - web sites).
"The damage caused by that willful indifference is incalculable," the Post said, noting that US prestige in much of the world is at an "historic low."
The Post decried Bush's "reckless fiscal policy", saying he had driven the deficit to record levels through lack of spending discipline and insistance on tax cuts tilted toward the wealthy.
Kerry "has the better approach" on many issues including the budget, health care, the environment and social issues, the Post said.
"We believe the challenger is well equipped to guide the country in a time of danger. Mr Kerry brings a resume that unarguably has prepared him for high office," it said.
The Post said it had been dismayed by Kerry's "zigzags" on Iraq and questioned if he would be decisive enough or overly concerned about offending allies while in the Oval Office.
"We do not view a vote for Mr Kerry as a vote without risks. But the risks on the other side are well known, and the strengths Mr Kerry brings are considerable," it concluded.
Kerry had already picked up endorsements from The New York Times as well as from dailies in Philadelphia, San Francisco and Boston, while the papers in Dallas and Chicago backed President George W. Bush.

They've only been actively campaigning for him since he won the IOWA caucus...
I hope everyone can get over their shock pretty easily. _________________ ~ Echo Juliet ~

Wisdom? LOL Kerry make a speech to the senate saying his buddy Daniel Ortegia was going to throw the Soviets out if the senate would only cut off aid to the Contras. So the senate did and a week later Kerry's buddy went to Moscow and got a $200 million loan.
Wisdom ? In the O'Neil-Kerry debate Kerry assured the Ameria people hos friends the communists in SE Asia would not kill the civilians if the USA pulled out. When the USA did pull out millions were killed directly and in trying to flee the country.
Wisdom ? Kerry fought against every move Reagan made to win the cold war . But now brings up Reagan name in the debates like he was a backer of Reagans ideas.
Wisdom ? Kerry wanted the USA to pull out of Vietnam and just leave our POWs behind and hope that they were nice enough to let them go years or decades later. |

WW2--The WaPo would have endorsed any Democrat--especially if Jesus was the Republican candidate for President. _________________ The last refuge of scoundrels is not patriotism; it is finicky liberal humanitarianism.--Martin Paretz |

Tha Washington Post has never endorsed a Republican candidate,
They have the previledge of being in the same category as Jessy Jackson, Michael Moore, Teddy Kennedy, Dan Rather............
