Unconfirmed Report: Kidnapped Tri-State Soldier Killed
Maupin Captured In Iraq In April

BATAVIA, Ohio -- There are unconfirmed reports that a soldier from the Tri-State kidnapped in April in Iraq has been killed, WLWT has learned.

Pfc. Matt Maupin, 20, of Batavia, Ohio, a member of the 724th Transportation Company, was captured April 9. His convoy was attacked by gunmen using rocket-propelled grenades and other weapons.

According to military representatives close to the Maupin family who spoke to WLWT, sources are reporting that the Al Jazeera TV network has a videotape of Maupin being shot.

The military has not changed Maupin's status, and the report of his death has not been confirmed.

Officials examining video, Al-Jazeera reports Maupin killed

By Reid Forgrave
Enquirer staff writer
June28, 2004

UNION TOWNSHIP - Friends and supporters of Army Specialist Keith "Matt" Maupin gathered in vigils and prayer this evening while his family awaited official word on his fate amid reports that Iraqi militants had killed him.

The Gulf-based Arab television network Al-Jazeera television reported today that Iraqi militants said Maupin, held hostage for nearly three months, was killed because the U.S. government did not change its policy in Iraq. But U.S. military officials said there was no confirmation of the report.

The Arab news report came just hours after the United States returned sovereignty in Iraq to an interim government. The report did not say when Maupin was killed. The Clermont County native was captured during an Iraqi insurgent assault on a convoy west of Baghdad on April 9.

The Arab satellite station today aired video showing a blindfolded man sitting on the ground. Al-Jazeera said that in the next scene, gunmen shoot the man in the back of the head, in front of a hole dug in the ground. It did not show the killing, The Associated Press reported.

However, Army Maj. Willie Harris, public affairs officer for the 88th Regional Readiness Command, stressed that there is "no indication so far that the video contains footage of Matt Maupin or any other Army soldier."

Yellow ribbons and prayers
By P.J. Huffstutter and Stephanie Simon
Los Angeles Times

There was nothing to do but wait. And pray.
Take down a tattered yellow ribbon; tie a fresh one in its place.

And wait.

Clermont County's Union Township has been on edge for three months, ever since a local kid -- a high school football player, an honors student with a smile to remember -- was taken hostage in Iraq.

News finally came this week, but it only led to more uncertainty.

Iraqi insurgents said they had killed Army Spc. Keith Matthew Maupin, 20. They produced a video, a dark, grainy clip showing a man being shot in the head and pitching forward into a grave. The man was shown only from the back. Military officials analyzed the tape for hours Tuesday and still they could not confirm the victim's identity.
