this is a trend at work in the US for some time (early 1970ies). Unlike in other post-industrial countries the US unions are merely wage and industrial relation players, not so much stakeholders in everyday politics as for example in Europe. Many unions are increasingly apolitical.
The only exception in the US appear to be "service sectors" unions, particularly non-military government employee sub-segments. They took a turn hard-left - probably due to the hefty non-business "academic" population among these institutions.
The oddity here is that the main corner embracing LEFT-wing agenda is not blue collar labor but government workers and pointyhead teachers.. IMHO this is THE REASON why conservatives in power should force open the near-monopoly the NEA and other orgs with a particular agenda currently have on these sectors..
Free Government services for private sector initiatives by vouchers. That would skirt these left wing whackos of their power and give our children higher quality education at the same time !

| And it takes conservatism for that to happen. Power hungry liberals will forever fight to prevent it and that has what the Democratic party has evolved into. Until this is understood by more Americans, it's going to be a ferocious battle for many years to come. |

The worker people have alwys been of conservative mind. The liberals have just swayed them into beliving that the state can do anything and should. I see only a question of time before Bush takes on the corrupted labor unions and the AntiChristLuneticUnion..
