Let's see how UN/ Chirac does in the renewed Ivory Coast mess now. Maybe The former Dem nominee can offer his expertise.

The French lost 8 Peace Keepers there, I mourn the Loss of a fellow Soldier. However on the Political end of things, the French Colonialism has left much of Africa a shambles. As well as any Country that was once a French Colony.
Should be interesting to see how they deal with this in the Security Council Session called today.

As per usual, the French has messed things up as they did in nearly every case in their history - and like the past they will look to us to bail them out

They do not even use their own troops but rely on a bunch of foreign and mostly criminals and convicts they call the Legion .

Yes, recall Senator Kerrorist's comments about the US outsourcing in Tora Bora (false implications though they were.)

The French youth of the Great War served admirably and suffered horredously (over 50% casualties). The flower of French youth and most of a generation was spent by "The Donkey Soldiers" who sent them. They have not recovered. The Govts of France have never come to grips with it. It remains so.

In 1954, just before the French lost Dien Bien Phu in Vietnam, they asked the US to bail them out. The USA did not grant their request.
It is one of many reasons they are not friendly to the USA.

Aye. And remember, it was the Democrats that draged your butts into that mess. If it hadn't been for the Francophile arse kissers in your Congress, there would never have been a Viet Nam war. Even if the Congress did turn the French down initially, by the time that Kennedy got in all the back room deals and wet palms had been sealed. And so, it was off to Nam with nary a squeak. Dominoe theory ME ARSE!!! Mad

It is far more complicated than that. In 1954 we were still concluding Korea. The Dominoe theory was no joke. Had the French Govt done things differently, maybe things would have been changed. Dien Bien Phu was a strategic mistake the military command refused to acknowlege, kind of like Verdun. Nonetheless it set the stage and in hindsight, yea, should have been different, but what happened happened. Lets deal with the present.

If we are going to deal successfully with the present we have to insure that we don't repeat the mistakes of the past. The idea, after all, is to heal old wounds without inflicting new ones. We can no longer trust the judgements and actions of the French (If we ever could) and we should not allow ourselves to become embroilled in some debacle of their creating. If we are going to become involved in the Ivory Coast then it must be establishes and understood from the outset that the operation will be controlled solely by the US Military and that the politics of the French will be kept out of it. In fact, we should demand that the French vacate the region entirely before one American soldier even sets foot in the area. That is the only way to insure a victory in the region.

Generally agreed, but this a mess made by the UN/French buraucracy. We should stay out of it, but we need to make sure it is contained and see if the African States can't take the initiative if at all possible. None of these is easy to guage. Pain in the butt, ain't it?

I agree that America should stay out of the region at least for the time being. It may turn out however that the Ivory Coast is a part of the greater war on terrorism in which case we must make sure that we can assume absolute and unquestioned control of the military situation there.
There can be no compromise in this matter as far as it concerns military operations. What comes afterward may be set up to the Organization of African States to decide. But the military aspects of our involvement must be controlled absolutely and only by us.
