ARMYMOM: You should be proud of that vote. Being ashamed of Nixon is all balled up with being "ashamed" of Vietnam. The only thing I am ashamed of about Vietnam is the way it was conducted by the White House during the Johnson and Kennedy Administrations. I am sorry Kennedy allowed us to get backed into it after Khruchchev publicly spanked him at the Vienna summit. (It is why we need men of character and conviction as POTUS. Married womanizers are weaklings; Kennedy was weak, and allowed himself to be pushed around. Some shrink can do the psych profile on the connection; I just know it is so. If you can't stand up to poontang temptation, you can't stand up to anything.) So I am ashamed we voted for a weak charmer when we needed a strong leader.

So. Where was I? Oh yes. Explaining how being made to feel as if we should be ashamed of Nixon is tied to Vietnam. So Kennedy gets dead, and we got Johnson, who forged ahead with the b*tch slapped foreign policy, sending troops to Vietnam for five and a half years while his Sec Def McNamara restricted what they could do. (Note: Nations don't win wars with one hand tied behind their back, duh.) Nixon sought to end the war with as little carnage as possible. We did NOT have to lose that war, but for the Democrats to destroy Nixon, we had to lose. That is what Watergate was all about, people. The destruction was near complete, and is the Democrats' crowning "achievement." It probably still gives them goose pimples.

And of course, I am sure you are all aware of Kerry's involvment in this "glorious achievement", and you of course know of Hillary Clinton's involvement.

One last note about Nixon: My first vote was for Reagan, at 19. Reagan is widely credited for ending the Cold War, and while I love Reagan, I can only go so far as saying he delivered the coup de grace. Nixon did most of the heavy lifting. For Reagan to get all the credit is just another example of how revisionist history is practiced in the US.

Re: Richard Nixon's worthiness

Ah! Vindicated at last, and by no less an authority than Kimmymac. I thought she was at a party in Austin.

My first vote in Presidential elections was for one of John McCain's heros (Barry Goldwater). I liked the nuclear thing. Still do. It would save a lot of lives in Fallujah. How about borrowing a couple of atomic hand grenades from our Polish allies and lobbing them into those safe houses?

In one of the national campaigns, a Republican used the slogan "In your heart, you know he's right." I'm too tired to look up who said it, but it's good advice in situations like the Swift Boat Vets quest for truth. You can argue forever with a Kerry supporter, parrying points and counterpoints. But in my heart, I know I'm right and they're wrong. Case closed.

In your heart you know he’s right - Barry Goldwater

Goldwater was receiving much criticism from the media and opposition candidates saying he had extremist views. This slogan was used to combat this negative publicity and attempted to make the point that his views were not that different from most ordinary Americans.

You know. Red state morons like us. At least we are not extremist any longer; now we are simply stupid.

"There is too much at stake to stay home." Johnson talking about Goldwater's supposed indiscriminate use of nuclear weapons.

Sound familar? The Democrats ought to get a new riff. REPUBLICANS WANT TO KILL EVERYONE is just not getting it done for them any more.

What is so ironic is that Goldwater would have had Vietnam over and done with in 4 months, and Johnson turned it into one gigantic cluster screw.

The past is prologue, folks.

Unfortunate POW experience aside,
John McCain neither was nor is a "great" American... he CERTAINLY doesn't belong in the same sentence as Oliver North!

I may be 3rd generation Navy, but through Oliver North, the Marines once again showed us how to be MEN! You cannot, by ANY remote stretch of the imagination say the same for Mr. McCain.

During one of the MIA/POW hearings McCain went off on a family member. Basically saying 'give it up'. I think it was Ann Holland he charged. I'll try to search my records for the report. kerry wanted him as he remembers McCain supported his desire to normalize relations with the Viets so his cousin could receive contracts worth hundreds of millions for rebuilding.

We recognise and thank him for his service, but he is too quirky to be anything like a Senator even. Capt. Queeg. He is the Democrats favorite Republican and is one of the pair that gave us McCain-Feingold, a disastrous piece of unconstitutional legislation. Mr. Bush miscalculated by not vetoing it.

Ollie North was and is more of a man than any of his detractors can ever hope to be. I supported him in his failed bid for US Senate in Virginia, against John Warner in the 90's. He would still get my vote no matter what office he sought. He embodies the qualities that we all want in our leaders. And he has proven, through much public pressure, that he will not roll over to save his own skin. I would serve with him anywhere, anytime and any place.

Lt.Col. North, I salute you.

Ollie North is now, always has been, and always will be one of the finest Americans to stand on the soil of Ameria. And nobody can change that. Gawd, imagine if Ollie were president.
