Colin Powell would have the best opportunity to draw votes from all groups in the Nation. The possibility he will run scares the Kool-Aid drinkers to death.

Foreign Policy Experience: Secretary of State and builder of coalition during Gulf War I. Respected diplomat who can build alliances.

Military Experience: Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff, Respected Vietnam Vet, Graduate of West Point and knows the Pentagon inside and out.

National Security Experience: Held Condi's position in Reagan Administration.

A true "moderate" Republican who can draw support from all and enlarge the base.

Brings Leadership, Integrity and Honor to the table.

If you were Hillary would you like to debate this guy? He would have her for lunch with no leftovers baby.

Oh and did I mention he is African American and the son of Immigrants? Republican’s chance to erase lots of blue from the map.

I've met Powell while in the military; he is a confident and inspiring leader.

Finally with a resume like this even a Southern Red Neck has to give this man props.

The proposed nominees in the posts above all have too much baggage for an effective run.

Colin Powell once said that there was no way he would go after the presidency because his wife said "not no, but hell no".

Wonder if that still stands?

Believe it is too early to handicap the 08 race. Someone no one is thinking of will emerge. We seem to be focusing on established names. One problem is age. When you consider McCain, Powell or Voinovich & others think how old they will be 4 years from now. Another thing to think about is the primary process. In both parties the nominating process tends to rule out certain candidates.

Although nobody paid any attention to this before the election, lots of media types are saying that Bush won because of Christian values, and of the 22% of voters who thought "values" were the most important issue in the election, 80% of them voted for Bush. A 60% net difference out of 22% of the voters is 13.2%, which can swing ANY election.

For this reason, pro-choice candidates like Rudy Giuliani or Colin Powell might not be able to motivate the pro-life Christian vote like Bush did, and might end up losing to someone like Hillary Clinton, or a third-party group (a la Ross Perot) might end up costing the Republicans the election.

Giuliani might be useful elsewhere, in order to get Hillary out of the Senate in 2006--he is VERY popular in New York!

I'm not sure who the best GOP candidate for 2008 would be right now. Jeb Bush would be great if he were not the President's brother--pro-life, governor of a big state, married to a Hispanic woman, and he'd win Florida in a landslide. Condi Rice could attract black votes and make California competitive, but she has never held elected office. Senator Bill Frist seems to be too much of a "nice guy" to match Democrat attacks. Senator John McCain could probably win, but how old would he be in 2008, and could he be trusted? What if he ran against Kerry?

I certainly hope that the President and his Administration use the recent election and their 55 Senators to quickly enact their agenda during the next two years, because otherwise things might get delayed somewhat when candidates start jockeying for position in the primaries in 2007...
