Kerry to travel to Iraq, meet with troops
Plans discussions on war on terror

By Glen Johnson, Globe Staff | December 9, 2004

Senator John F. Kerry, who rooted his unsuccessful presidential campaign in an alternate vision of the Iraqi occupation, will visit that nation next month during a swing through the Middle East.

The Massachusetts Democrat is to meet with National Guard troops from Massachusetts, other active-duty armed forces personnel, and others during the tour. The dates of his travel, the length of his stay, and his exact itinerary were being withheld for security purposes.

''He's going because he wants to thank the troops from Massachusetts," said Kerry spokeswoman April Boyd. ''While he's there, he'll also be meeting with military commanders, embassy officials, and Iraqi government leaders. The purpose will be to discuss the war in Iraq and the war on terrorism."

Elections in Iraq are scheduled for Jan. 30. During the US presidential campaign, Kerry warned that the Iraqi elections would be hampered if the security situation in the country did not improve.

Prior to his campaign, Kerry made a similiar trip, traveling solo to Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and meeting with the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

Following that trip, he condemned President Bush and his administration for backing out of the Middle East peace process. He also argued that his personal relationships with the leaders, built over a 20-year career on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, left him in better standing than Bush to win the leaders' support as the United States sought multinational support for the occupation and postwar reconstruction.

During his presidential campaign, Kerry pledged that, as president, he would travel to the United Nations as well as the Middle East to open a new chapter in US foreign relations. Since losing the race in early November, he has largely stayed out of public view, vacationing, attending to Senate business, and, last weekend, traveling to New Hampshire to thank campaign supporters. He has also established a reelection committee and a political action committee to support Democratic candidates across the country.

In addition, he has $15 million remaining in his presidential campaign account, leaving him currently the best-funded candidate should he decide to make another run for the White House.

Kerry also visited London last month, where he spoke to business leaders.

Lurch has had a lifelong dream of being POTUS. He will not fade into the woodwork.
The Swifties have a job on their hands again, because Lurch will be around in '08.
Going to Iraq is just a publicity stunt.
Does anybody know if Lurch voted for or against the Intelligence Bill in the Senate yesterday?
Or was he MIA again?

The vote was 96-2 with "Tweety" Byrd (D-WVA) and "Fritz" Hollings (D-S.C.), casting the nay votes - don't know who the missing two were

I would love to see him field questions like Rummy did Very Happy

Can you picture this on CNN....some youg E-4 getting ready to roll north into Iraq for the first time.

Senator Kerry, during your failed campaign to become our Commander in Chief, you refused to sign the Standard Form 180 to make your military records public....Why?? and the second part of my question is why did you vote for the war in Iraq and then vote against funding, effectively denying us the protection and Body Armor that we deserve??

Didn't the idiot stop over in Iowa on his way to Idaho the other day.
Now private jets can get you around pretty quickly, but I think that
he's still AWOL from the Senate.

I also think that an Iraq trip would be pretty dicey, especially if he
isn't travelling with Secret Service protection. Didn't that disappear
as soon as he lost the race and wasn't a candidate anymore?

Of course he coulda gotten a letter to the tune of:

"We have just found a container in an unmarked bunker here in
Iraq that has 20 million dollars in unmarked $100 bills in it and have
no way to get it out of the country. We need your bank account
number to transfer the cash electronically".

So he's not going to give out his bank accound number when he can
fly over and bring it back personnaly. Well, it COULD happen.

Very Happy

I'd like to see him asked if he is going back and testify to the Senate that he witnessed war crimes this time too.

heart. Can Senators get purple hearts? Of course he can. He got
a "V" on his silver star didn't he?

I agree that an Iraq trip could be dicey, but not for security
reasons. More like the PURE EMBARRASSMENT of the troops
not wanting to see him.
Remember Hillary's trip. The soldiers did not crowd around to
greet her. She had to wobble around in her high heels trying to
find someone to talk to.

I loved it!!!

Kerry's Mass. constituents should be asking , when he is going to report for duty to his own senate seat. He is bad for the morale of our troops and his lack of respect for our president and our country's policies should keep him from wasting taxpayer money and valuable military time in Iraq.

According to Paul Sullivan, WBZ radio host John Kerry never went to
any of the funerals for soliders who had died in the current Iraqi war.

He also said that Kerry didn't really want to authorize the Iraqi war but
that he knew it was politically expedient to do so.

Sen. Kerry's just a phony. What worries me as that 59 million people voted for him without knowing much of anything about him, just because he was a democrat.
