I’m happy Bush is shown and I have no problem with them putting Churchill up there, but how dare they put that communist FDR up. FDR cut and ran from Poland leaving their leaders to be assassinated after being given assurances to Churchill we would press the Soviets. FDR was a disgrace and made no hard decisions in WWII. His New Deal has crippled our country and made it a socialist state, drowning in entitlements. FDR thought of the World War I bonus check protesters as nothing but scum and drunks and shipped them off to the Florida Keys to build a bridge in un-humane living conditions where 400+ died in the hurricane of 33' because of course no one gave a damn. It sickens me anytime the left puts that FDR up as some kind of symbol of anything good. If they were accurate about history they would have put Truman and Churchill side by side. Truman made much tougher decisions then FDR and there is no doubt in my mind Truman would have kept his promise to the Polish had he been President a couple of years earlier. Never has Time had a president as Man of the Year Twice by themself so leave it to those communists to put their favorite communist poster boy up there. If they were intellectually honest it would of been Truman not FDR they pictured.
Never mind I jumped the gun. Bush stands alone as Man of the Year, no idea why drudge posted a pic of FDR and Truman behind him. Blah _________________ "An activist is the person who cleans up the water, not the one claiming its dirty."

If you follow the link on Drudge, you will see a Time cover with an artists rendering of GW. What I think Drudge was going for is a measure of respect to a war leader. What he did was take Stalin out of a picture of the "Big Three" and inserted Bush.
Historically speaking, I think you are being a little hard on FDR. There is no doubt that he gave us some our largest social programs and that led to many others, but you must understand that there was a real fear that our government could be subjected to a communist takeover in the thirties. In the economic upheaval of the times many countries had their form of government changed. After the Russian Revolution in 1918, communists in other countries were at work to overturn their governments. While not often succeeding they were able to help create enough turmoil to allow others to do so, such as with the Nazis in Germany.
The Bonus Marchers you spoke of, were led by the American Communist Party. The vast majority of those who marched had no affiliation with the party but showed up out of desperation. By the time MacAurther was ordered to intervene they had left and what remained were the ardent communists and the drunk and shiftless. The press ignored this and preferred to attack MacAurther and the President, who was Hoover by the way. Thus such legends are formed and begun to be accepted as fact.
I've never heard or read about the bonus marchers being rounded up and sent off to build a bridge in the Florida keys. I'm aware that the bridge was built and the conditions were poor. But that was also a different time. Check out the working conditions at the building of Hoover Dam or the Empire State Building. Times were bad and these people were grateful for the job, regardless of the conditions. But it was also FDR who laid the groundwork for correcting these conditions. _________________ John Kerry. I was wrong on the date. It was 1935 when the storm hit and although it was FDR who sent them down to the keys and set them up in terrible work conditions and unprotected tents and housing. My memory was wrong on thinking it was FDR who broke up the Bonus marchers camp in Washington and it should be noted this was one of the reasons for Hoover losing his presidency. My memory sometimes stinks. And maybe I am a bit too hard on FDR, but his actions regarding Poland and his massive programs which we are still burdoned with today do bother me. _________________ "An activist is the person who cleans up the water, not the one claiming its dirty."

If it hadn't been for FDR, how far would Hitler have gotten before Congress would figure out their dumbass isolationist attitude wasn't the answer? Hitler/Germany and Saddam/Iraq..........any similarities?
FDR's social programs were designed to get us out of the Depression. They were successful and WW II did the rest. Too bad the programs weren't temporary. |

We entered the war too soon. We should have kept up our supply to the British and continued our focus with the Japanese, but made it clear to the Brits that Russia had to fall. We made a huge mistake in letting the Bolsheviks remain in power. We further made a monumental mistake in letting them capture all the satellite countries. Problem was though we had too many leaders in the US that sympathized with the Bolsheviks in that they thought maybe this great grand communist utopia would work. We call them communist sympathizers and unfortunately FDR was one of them. _________________ "An activist is the person who cleans up the water, not the one claiming its dirty."

As I recall, Germany declared war on the USA exactly one week after Pearl Harbor. We also had the Japs messing around near the West coast and German U-boats on our East coast. Their U-boats also were interfering with our supply freighters to and from Britain. Our decision to go to war was effectively made for us.
Should have taken Russia when we got done with the Nazis just like we should have taken Baghdad the first time we were there. History is so repetitious. |

The problem with going to war with Russia after WWII is that the public would not have stood for it. Also remember that we thought we had maybe two more years of fighting ahead of us in the pacific. Had it not been for the bomb we would have needed Russia to take on the Jappanese in China and Korea. Otherwise they would have been pulled back to protect the homeland. Keeping them occupied on mainland would have been crucial to the success of the invasion of the main islands. _________________ John Kerry. A Neville Chamberlain for our times. |
