<"New Palestinian Leader Hails Terrorists," 1/2/05, David's Blog>

"Jerusalam, Jan.1 -- Mahmoud Abbas, the front-runner in the Palestinian presidential race, said Saturday, that the Palestinian leadership had a duty to protect militants wanted by Israel and indicated that he did not intend to crack down on them." So reported the New York Times, the Orwellian paper of record in its January 2nd edition. Well, actually, it referred to the terrorists as "militants" and headlined its article "Abbas Sees Duty to Shield Militants." It buried the story on p. 11. If you ever wondered what it was like to be in England in Neville Chamberlain's day and hear the appeasers of Hitler referred to as peacemakers, this is it. Imagine if the Times reported the news accurately instead of covering up for terrorists. The Times would then report that the terrorist Mahmoud Abbas, who helped orchestrate the kidnapping and murder of nine Israeli atheletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics, proclaimed in advance of his coronation as the new Palestinian leader to replace the dead assassin and world class thief Yassir Arafat that he would protect terrorists the Israelis were attempting to bring to justice: "'We will not forget the wanted, the heroes,' he said at a rally in Rafah, a much-battered [terrorist base[ on Gaza's southern border with Egypt. 'They are fighting for freedom.'"

To be fair, the Times is an Orwellian paper with a guilty conscience, letting the truth slip in every paragraph or so: "He received a raucous welcome and was raised on the shoulders of Palestinian gunmen as he campaigned in Rafah. He also defended his recent campaign appearances with gunmen in the last few days. 'When we see them, when we meet them, and when they welcome us we owe them." Exactly what are they owed? Abbas is running a classic Palestinian campaign of deceit, gesturing towards the "peace process" that has already resulted in the murder of thousands of innocent Israelis, while signalling to the terrorist Palestinian majority that the destructiion of Israel is still his goal. Unfortunately, the forces of evil in the Middle East have many credulous well-wishers in the West not least because of institutions like the New York Times which abet their deceptions.

“Time to vote,” by Charles Krauthammer, 1/7/05
(excerpts)

"... Abbas, we are told, is the great hope ... The peacemaker cometh. ...

Jan. 1: Abbas declares that he will never crack down on Palestinian terrorism. .... Some of the American & Israeli responses to Abbas are enough to make you weep. Spokesman at the U.S. Embassy in Israel: ``We don't think it is useful to focus on every statement by every official; what's important is the process.'' Official in Prime Minister Sharon's office: ``Words don't count in the Middle East; what counts are actions.''

Have we learned nothing? In the Middle East, words are actions. .... In Abbas' first moment of real leadership, his long-anticipated emergence from the shadow of Arafat, he chooses to literally hoist the flag of the terrorist al-Aqsa Brigades. Can Abbas turn into a Sadat, who also emerged from the shadow of a charismatic leader, reversed policy and made peace with Israel? I'll believe it when I see it. And hear it."

Terror Widow: Abu Mazen Financed Munich Murders
07:38 Jan 07, '05 / 26 Tevet 5765

The widow of one of the 11 Israeli athletes whom Arab terrorists murdered at the Olympics in Germany in 1972 said Thursday PA leader Abu Mazen was the "finance minister" of the attack.

Elana Romano, whose husband Yosef was killed in the attack, said she possesses a "tape in which [Abu Mazen] admits his involvement in the murder of the athletes." Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas) is the acting Palestinian Authority (PA) chairman and is the leading candidate to win Sunday's election campaign for the post.

Elana Romano, on the even of Abu Mazen's expected victory, said he brought the money from Saudi Arabia to finance the attack. Abu Mazen "was taped without his knowing" she added.

An organization that works for missing Israelis captured or killed by terrorists also demanded that Abu Mazen act to return personal property of those killed. "According to information we have gathered from different sources, we know that some of those missing still are living," said the organization's spokesman Daniel Grisero.

"We demand that Abu Mazen turn over to Israel any information he has concerning the fate of the missing soldiers from [the Lebanese war battle of] Sultan Yaakub and part of the identity tag of Zacharia Baumel as Yasser Arafat once promised to the late Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin," Grisero added.

He also said that Abu Mazen must apologize to the families of the Munich murder victims and express regret for his actions. "He must say clearly that there will be no more terror. We sent this request to the PA this morning and still have not received an answer."

They're talking about Abbas right now on Fox -- mentioned his cavorting with the terrorists - but also saying he might not have the "instinct for terrorism" that Arafat had... no mention of the Olympics murders.

I recall a TV interview Abbas had with a Palestinian TV station (on C-Span) a year ago or so ... they were discussing the Americans bringing freedom and democracy to the Middle East -- the host and Abbas were snickering about this idea, and Abbas said, "yeah, they bring an armored democracy" -- they had a good laugh together. He said this numerous times in that interview, like it was a pet phrase, an inside joke between he and the host. I haven't forgotten his words or body language in that friendly buddy-buddy interview - nor have I forgotten his past. I cannot imagine how it feels to be Israel right now ... guess we'll know soon enough what direction Abbas will choose.....
