I visited the Coronado Memorial yesterday, met Ben Cueva and couple of other fellows including a former CCB commander. Climbed all over CCB-18 with my grandson. Ben Cueva and two SEABEEs from Self Help at North Island, CE2 Salazar and EO1 Messer had just finished digging a trench for electrical service to the memorial, I took photographs and will share after I return home. Touring the CCB is hot and sweaty, no fans, no A/C, no ventilation, plus no lights, just like old times for riverine sailors remember. I guess that the CCB will eventually get wired up. Three grody looking AN/VRC-46 (RT-524/VRC) in the CCB. One PBR and PCF-104 there too. I think Ben Cueva told me he was on PCF-23, also with COSDIV-11.
The electrical service will illuminate the roll of honor naming the dead from MRF, mostly U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, 9th ID.

Edited twice, added name of EO1 Messer as one of the Seabees, corrected number of VRC-46 spotted in CCB-18. _________________ I'm a U.S. Navy Vietnam War vet against John Kerry

Richard, leave directions. I get out that way often and would be interested in dropping by to check it out. |

See map from R B Shirley just above, thanks R B! NAB Coronado is located along California State Highway 75 (Silver Strand Highway). You need to get on the other side of San Diego Bay, either cross the bridge and drive through the City of Coronado, or drive south down towards the border and take the Palm St. exit off I-5, which becomes Hwy 75, and proceed north on Hwy 75 through Imperial Beach and up through Silver Strand State Park, in which case, the part of Amphibious Base you are seeking will be on your right, Navy Specops commands to your left across the highway, the old Hotel Del Coronado visible and straight ahead when you make your turn (coming from the south), or on your right as you exit City of Coronado coming from the bridge, distance from Hotel Del Coronado to main gate about 1/2-1 mile. _________________ I'm a U.S. Navy Vietnam War vet against John Kerry
