Police: Sex Abuse Suspect Claims Immunity
Thursday February 24, 2005 11:55am

Bedford, Va. (AP) - Authorities say Bedford County investigators arrested a man accused of soliciting a girl for sex over the Internet, but released him because of his diplomatic immunity.

Bedford County Sheriff Mike Brown says that Salem Al-Mazrooei, a diplomat from the United Arab Emirates, was arrested Wednesday, then released. Brown says Al-Mazrooei sent sexually explicit e-mails for several weeks to an undercover investigator he thought was a 13-year-old girl.

County investigators say Al-Mazrooei drove from his home in Fairfax County (website - news) to Forest Wednesday to meet a girl in a shopping center parking lot. They say that instead, he met an officer of Bedford County's Blue Ridge Thunder Task Force - a division of the sheriff's office that works to catch people soliciting children via the Internet.

Police say Al-Mazrooei immediately claimed diplomatic immunity.

Bedford County Commonwealth's Attorney Randy Krantz says officials filed a verbal protest to have the diplomat's immunity revoked and planned to follow up Thursday with a written request.

Definately a case where immunity goes WAY too far... there should be some serious limitations on Diplomatic Immunity.... (not to mention the UN parking tickets :/)
