Vietnam War-era mortar shell blast kills one teenager, injures two others
A teenager was killed and two others were seriously injured when a Vietnam War-era mortar shell exploded while they were playing with it in central Vietnam, officials said on Tuesday.
Ta Thi Tuyet, 11, was killed instantly in Sunday’s blast, which also left two others ages 15 and 16 seriously injured in Tan Thuong village of Lam Dong province, some 300 kilometres northeast of Ho Chi Minh City, said village official K’Bros.
K’Bros said the teens collected the shell from a nearby coffee plantation, and it exploded while they were playing with it.
The village was a communist stronghold during the Vietnam War, he said.
Dozens of people have been killed or maimed each year by unexploded ordnance since the Vietnam War ended in 1975.
