On this First Anniversary of their courageous and history-making campaign, my eternal gratitude to Admiral Hoffmann, John O'Neill and all of the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth membership.
BZ! Swiftees!
Quote: | Senator Kerry,
We write from our common heritage as veterans of duty aboard Swift Boats in the Vietnam War. Indeed, you should note that a substantial number of those men who served directly with you during your four month tour in Vietnam have signed this letter.
It is our collective judgment that, upon your return from Vietnam, you grossly and knowingly distorted the conduct of the American soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen of that war (including a betrayal of many of us, without regard for the danger your actions caused us). Further, we believe that you have withheld and/or distorted material facts as to your own conduct in this war.
We believe you continue this conduct today, albeit by changing from an anti-war to a "war hero" status. You now seek to clad yourself in the very medals that you disdainfully threw away in the early years of your political career. In the process, we believe you continue a deception as to your own conduct through such tactics as the disclosure of only carefully screened portions of your military records. Both then and now, we have concluded that you have deceived the public, and in the process have betrayed honorable men, to further your personal political goals.
Your conduct is such as to raise substantive concerns as to your honesty and your ability to serve, as you currently seek, as Commander-in-Chief of the military services.
It is vital that the American public have as much information as possible about candidates for President of the United States. In various ways, you have rightly called upon President Bush to be fully accountable and to provide full disclosure. In the same spirit, now that you are the presumptive nominee of your Party, we believe it is incumbent upon you to make your total military record open to the American people.
Specifically, we the undersigned formally request that you authorize the Department of the Navy to independently release your military records (through your execution of Standard Form 180), complete and unaltered, including your military medical records. Further, we call upon you to correct the misconceptions your campaign seeks to create as to your conduct while in Vietnam. Permit the American public the opportunity to assess your military performance upon the record, and not upon campaign rhetoric.
Senator Kerry, we were there. We know the truth. We have been silent long enough. The stakes are too great, not only for America in general but, most importantly, for those who have followed us into service in Iraq and Afghanistan. We call upon you to provide a full, accurate accounting of your conduct in Vietnam.
Respectfully,
Roy Alexander

Thanks Admin for remembering! We were talking about it at dinner tonight. When we got home from DC a year ago little did we know what our lives would be like for the next six months--reporters, hate mail, hate phone calls etc. However, it also had a very positive side--renewing old friendships and making lots of wonderful new friends such as Navy Wife and Navy Chief. We'd do it again in a heartbeat!! Thanks to all of you, especially all of the wonderful supporters on this forum. I wish we could have met all of you personally.

History will always point to the SwiftVet/POW effort as an example of how courage, supported by the TRUTH will prevail over the biggest egos and the slickest spin machines.
My instincts warn me that you must keep your powder dry and build on the body of evidence. This snake is not dead and like many reptiles will try to grow another tail and make a comeback.
I hope there a groups in Arkansas getting ready to present the TRUTH with as much courage.
Retired USAF gratitude for your service, then and now. |

It is hard for me to grasp that an entire year has gone by since the SwiftVets’ press conference! – I have been thinking about it, watched the video again and have the same response now as then -- awe at the determination and courage of the personal stand taken by each and every one of them. After this press conference I waited for the media to explode with this story .. and it didn’t happen --- and that was the beginning of my awareness that someone or something has the power to suppress the truth from being heard….. (and I’ve been studying about and clawing at that “thing” ever since….)
After the press conference, I became so engaged in my support for the Swifts that I wanted everyone I knew to watch it and discuss the issues raised about kerry but found quickly that the word “Swiftboat” had become a “fighting term” and that I was to lose some friends and to see my family divided. That people did not agree with the stand the SwiftVets were taking was not what bothered me, well, it bothered me but I could live with it – what I took a personal affront to, what amazed and shocked me was the fact that some people I knew dismissed the Swiftees outright without even watching the press conference or reading their statement. As of today, this disappointment and outrage remains and continues. What is it in the minds of some people that causes them to just plain “not want to know?” (Party-line alone is dangerously unacceptable. To “refuse to know” is simply -- creepy.)
I thank the SVPT -- my eternal gratitude to each and every member for all they have done for this country –for exposing the truth about kerry and holding him accountable for who and what he is .. and for all I have learned and continue to learn about myself, my fellow man, our military (especially) and our country as a result of their stand.

I would be honored to be called up to stand with you in the event John F. Kerry makes another run. Admin, thank you so much for posting the letter from the Swifties. As I read Beatrice's posting, I felt such a connection because I experienced the same thing she did. I thought that press conference would be the end of John Kerry's nomination. I was so proud of those men!! I kept waiting and waiting, and the silence of the media was so loud that it stunned me. As we got deeper into the summer, I felt panicked that nothing was going to stop Kerry, but my goodness, things really mushroomed in August!
Of course, my family (only my sisters) would disown me if they knew my deep involvement with the Swiftboat Vets and especially with all of you on this Forum.
And to Coffee--getting to know you, the Swifties, and Navy Chief were some of the great things that came out of a terrible year! I'm like you, and if these incredible, brave, awesome people need us again, I'd again devote all those hours of research until the job was done!
Cheers!
