CU Professor's Essay About Sept. 11 Victims Protected
http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/4492750/detail.html?subid=22100484&qs=1;bp=t
DENVER -- Monday is the deadline for University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill to respond to claims of plagiarism.
The committee investigating Churchill determined he could not be punished for his essay, which compared the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to a Nazi official. But the committee is investigating charges that he copied other people's work.
The embattled ethnic studies professor has only a matter of hours to respond to allegations that he copied or misrepresented other authors' works, and that he may have misrepresented his American Indian heritage.
Churchill has denied any wrongdoing.
The panel determined previously that the First Amendment protects his essay, but he could lose his job if investigators find evidence of plagiarism. |

The real hoot was March 30, 2005:
Faculty Reviews Churchill By First Examining Themselves??? WHAAAT!!
Since late January, these pointy headed academicians have been reviewing
and hand-wringing - Oh, what to do, what to do.
Offer him early retirement?? Buyout??
It took them 2 months to decide his outrageous essay was protected,
maybe plagiarism??
He has six weeks to respond (why should it take him THAT long?)
Now it's down to a few hours for him to respond and I wouldn't be surprised if the smug sumbich gives
them the one-finger salute.
Sorry, but I have no faith that they will actually fire the guy.
Hope I'm wrong. _________________ “I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. ‘Tis the business of little minds to shrink; but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death.” (Thomas Paine, 1776) |

Shawa we need more people like you with tenure. You are a Socratic voice of reason. I always know when you post it will be thoughtful as opposed to the irrational rantings that the far left is becoming. _________________ "An activist is the person who cleans up the water, not the one claiming its dirty."

Quote: | U.S. professor counters plagiarism allegations
2005-05-18 / Associated Press /
A University of Colorado professor facing possible dismissal after being accused of plagiarism and lying about his American Indian heritage denied the allegations again in a report he submitted to a committee investigating his actions.
Ward Churchill, who first came under fire for an essay comparing September 11 victims to the Nazi bureaucrat who planned the Holocaust, offered a 50-page, single-spaced report Monday to a university committee investigating the allegations.
His lawyer, David Lane, said Churchill also submitted his tribal membership card showing he is an associate member of the Keetoowah Cherokee band. Lane said Churchill's membership was based on an investigation by a tribal genealogist.
"Permeating the entire response is 'Look, this is motivated by my First Amendment rights being trampled on. For me to even have to answer this is a denial of my First Amendment rights, but since you asked, here is my answer,'" Lane quoted Churchill as saying. |
Typical arrogance: I shouldn't even have to answer your charges!!!

Academia has closed ranks on this one. They've now realized, "There, but for the grace of god, we all go." They're not going to fire, punish or even shame him. First, because most professors are a bit bookish and timid, he's easily bullied most of them into submission. Secondly, they cherish tenure more than air or water. It's the very reason most of them still have jobs. It's not going away and neither is Ward-the-Indian. We can dream, pray and ***** but none of it will change professorland. _________________ '58 Airedale HMR(L)-261 VMO-2 |

You might get your wish about being wrong.
(Former Republican Senator) Hank Brown will take over the reigns of C.U. in August. I always considered him the "best" Senator Colorado ever produced. He is no longer a Senator because he ran on a "two term" platform, and kept his word. |

this gets more bizarre...

Lawyer: Churchill authored two essays under scrutiny
By Berny Morson, Rocky Mountain News
May 21, 2005
Quote: | Ward Churchill is the real author of two essays he is accused of plagiarizing, the University of Colorado ethnic studies professor's lawyer said Friday.
Parts of essays Churchill published in 1993 contain sentences and paragraphs worded similarly to portions of two works published the year before by other people.
One of the earlier essays was by Annette Jaimes, who was Churchill's wife at the time. The other was by Rebecca L. Robbins, who was Jaimes' professor at Arizona State University in Tempe.
The similarities have been eyed as possible plagiarism.
But Churchill's attorney, David Lane, said the situation was the other way around. Churchill wrote the earlier articles and gave them to Jaimes and Robbins, Lane said.
"Churchill did not borrow from those articles. He wrote those articles," Lane said. He said Robbins and Jaimes used the works with Churchill's approval.
Lane said Churchill gave the essay to Robbins because she liked it.
"Churchill wrote most of it, gave to Robbins. Robbins said, 'I like it.' He said, 'Well, you can publish it under your name, then,' " Lane said.
Jaimes, now a professor at San Francisco State University, denied that Churchill wrote her essay. She said the work was based on her doctoral dissertation.
"If that's what he's trying to claim, there's no other word to say than he's a liar and he's a fraud," Jaimes said.
"I think he's in a corner, and he's going to say whatever it takes to get the attention off of him," Jaimes said.
Allegations of plagiarism is one of the issues being investigated by a CU faculty committee looking into whether Churchill committed research misconduct and should lose his tenured teaching position.
Robbins could not be reached for comment.
Jaimes said she saw an early draft of Robbins' essay. It was by Robbins, Jaimes said.
Robbins' essay also was derived from a doctoral dissertation, Jaimes said.

I guess that settles that issue. Churchill was obviously plagarized first by somebody who was teaching him his "skills".
There has to be a better word than bizarre, though ... that's too bizarre to just be bizarre. |
