Uncertain fate of al-Zarqawi

Quote:

By Hassan Hanizadeh

Rumors that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the Jordanian-born leader of Al-Qaeda in Iraq, is dead or seriously injured have placed a cloud over the future of the terrorist group.

Two weeks ago, an Iraqi physician claimed to have treated a severely injured al-Zarqawi at a hospital in Ramadi.

The Iraqi doctor told U.S. forces that al-Zarqawi was in critical condition and would probably die. Some ten days later, al-Qaeda announced that since al-Zarqawi was seriously injured, a Saudi Arabian terrorist named Abu Hafs al-Qarni would be the new leader of the Al-Qaeda network in Iraq.

Regardless of whether al-Zarqawi is dead or alive, it seems that terrorist groups have stepped up their activities in Iraq since Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari assumed power.

However, the Iraqi government has recently taken some serious security measures to eradicate terrorist activities in Iraqi cities, and these measures are expected to bear fruit over the long term.

The death of al-Zarqawi would definitely lower morale among Arab terrorists operating in Iraq because he was skilled at organizing and leading terrorist groups.

A cunning character with a high IQ, al-Zarqawi had narrowly eluded capture by U.S. and Iraqi forces several times.

Al-Zarqawi also possessed an extraordinary ability to analyze political developments in Iraq, the region, and the international arena, and used this skill, along with military operations, in his efforts to spark a sectarian and ethnic civil war in Iraq.

Al-Zarqawi’s charisma and leadership skills helped turn this dangerous terrorist into a modern–day legend.

Therefore, his death would be a serious blow to Arab terrorist groups operating in Iraq. However, it would not signal the end.

Undoubtedly, the newly appointed leader of Al-Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Hafs al-Qarni, will follow al-Zarqawi’s path because most Arab terrorists ascribe to the Wahhabi school of thought.

This dangerous and backwards sect has two main objectives: opposing all progressive Islamic thought and fighting against the Shias.

Paradoxically, despite their mostly secular governments and opposition to every kind of Islamism, some Arab governments have made common cause with these terrorist groups in efforts to massacre Shias.

The world now faces the expanding phenomenon of Wahhabi terrorism, which can only be uprooted through the cooperation of the international community.

Nevertheless, the death of al-Zarqawi would be a prelude to the Iraqi government’s victory over the Arab terrorists. And if the Jaafari government confronts these terrorists more actively, the security situation in Iraq will definitely improve.

Although heightened security measures in violation of democratic principles may be necessary for a short while, the Iraqi government must use the current opportunity provided by al-Zarqawi’s absence to deliver the death blow to his terrorist group.
