Fred Thompson to Manage Supreme Court Nomination
Wednesday, July 06, 2005

GLENEAGLES, Scotland — President Bush has named former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson to help shepherd his yet-to-be named Supreme Court nominee through the Senate, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said Wednesday.

Thompson, an actor on the NBC television series "Law & Order," agreed to accept the post in a telephone conversation with the president on Monday, McClellan said.

He said Thompson would serve as an informal adviser to help liaise with the Senate.

"Senator Thompson will guide the nominee through the confirmation process," McClellan said.

I like Fred. But he was too nice and let the Dems sandbag him on his Committee on '96 election scandals.

This is intriguing. Usually it is an active sitting Senator who gets this job.
Maybe President Bush looked at the present bunch of Republican Senators
and said "no way I can trust them not to 'compromise'.

Ex-Senator Thompson knows the ropes and has a persuasive ability.
Most important of all, he is a SOLID CONSERVATIVE!!

Maybe he's the nominee. I guess I'd laugh pretty hard if that happened.

Stranger things have happened, FF.

Remember how Dick Cheney was in charge of finding a Vice President for Dubya?

That's what I was referring to. But here are a few other thoughts:

He could probably lobby the Senate more effectively than a judge or attorney general being familiar with probably still quite a few Senators.

Being in the Senate, he's probably a lot better at not making gaffes than those that have been lawyers not familiar with Washington

Wouldn't it be cool to have a SCOTUS judge doing cameo appearances on Law and Order?

I have no idea as to whether or not he's qualified though.

That was another subtle joke, right?

Since when is being qualified a prerequisite for being on the Supreme Court?

U.S. senators should be considered by President Bush to fill the vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said Wednesday.
