Vietnamese Prime Minister Praises VVAF, Encourages Continued Service in Vietnam
Washington, June 22, 2005 - During a private meeting with senior representatives of Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation (VVAF), Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai praised the success of VVAF's programs in Vietnam, urged the organization to continue its work assisting persons with disabilities, and supported expanding to a national scope its current survey of abandoned landmines in three provinces. Also discussed was Bill Belding's recent appointment as president of VVAF.
John F. Terzano, co-founder and board member discusses VVAF's history and programs with Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai

"VVAF was on the vanguard of normalizing relations between the United States and Vietnam," said the Prime Minister. "You helped make it possible for me to come here."

The highest ranking official from Vietnam to the United States since the war ended 30 years ago, Prime Minister Khai's visit held particular significance for VVAF, whose founders were the first delegation of Vietnam veterans to visit the southeast Asian country after the War in 1981. Representing VVAF were co-founder and board member John F. Terzano, President Belding, board member and former ambassador to Vietnam Raymond Burghardt, board member Robert Schiffer, Vice President Chris Gilson, and staff members Joe Donahue and Thao Griffiths. Also in attendance was the current Ambassador to Vietnam, Michael Marine.

"Over the years, we have developed a special relationship with the Vietnamese government by our commitment to reconciliation, rehabilitation and rebuilding through our programs of advocacy and service to victims of conflict," said Belding and Terzano in a joint statement released Tuesday last week.

VVAF is currently helping to identify and map the locations of some 3.5 million landmines and 300,000 tons of unexploded ordnance leftover from the Vietnam War in three provinces, and for more than a decade has helped to rebuild bodies and lives through its rehabilitation programs.

The Prime Minister's state visit also included a personal meeting with President George W. Bush in Washington, as well as stops in Seattle, New York and Boston.

With 'Hearts,' Nanci Griffith sings about love and war
By Jim Harrington, CONTRIBUTOR
"The 51-year-old Austin, Texas, native [Nanci Griffith] certainly doesn't sound at a loss for inspiration on "Hearts in Mind." Her anti-war stance reverberates like the bass at a hip-hop concert on the songs "Heart of Indochine" and "Old Hanoi," which strongly draw upon Griffith's experience during recent travels to Indochina with the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation."

VVAF Launches Own Workplace Giving Campaign
For years, VVAF has been a recipient of workplace giving dollars from employees or private companies and public workplaces nationwide. Each year many generous individuals designate part of their paychecks to VVAF through their employers' charitable campaigns.

2005 is a historic year for VVAF: it is the 30th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, the 25th anniversary of the founding of VVAF, and the 10th anniversary of reconciliation between Vietnam and the United States.

In order to commemorate these important anniversaries, VVAF launched its own workplace giving campaign on April 30, 2005 -- the day the Vietnam War ended 30 years ago. Through this campaign, our employees will have the opportunity to give, via payroll deductions, to other charities who are doing outstanding work in a broad range of fields, including health and human services, environment, education, human rights, and many more worthwhile causes.
