Hi -

Some friends left their house in Gulfport before the storm hit and are safe in Oklahoma. But they need to know if their house is still there, before they make the trip back. They live about 3 miles from the Gulf, somewhat elevated site so they were probably ok from surge damage, but they are wondering about other storm damage.

Is there a website that has sat. photos showing the damage in Gulfport and other places? It would have to be detailed enough to have some reference points to help in locating their home.

Thanks,

Liz

If the person has broadband this google earth site may help. You can zero in from a satellite to anyplace on earth, or so they say. I have not personally used it, but have heard from people who have.
http://earth.google.com/

Or how about this site?
http://wwwa.accuweather.com/hurricane/hurricane-news-video.asp?id=0&type=Hurricane&name=Katrina

Or the photo galleries on this NewsSite

Thanks -

I was thinking of the sat photos that are in earth google site - just did not know that it existed and my search queries were not getting to that site

Alas, the pictures are prior to the hurricane, but based on the messages on the board associated with the site, there are plenty of people asking for updated pictures for the exact same reason - to see if it is worth going back home or checking if a friend's house is still there.

I'll keep checking to see if the photos are updated and post an update if and when it happens.

You can check this forum by parish and see if there is any helpful information from here.

Also on this site are photos of the various parishes - you might be able to find pictures from the neighborhood that you're concerned about.

Good luck!

This thing is just absolutely horrendous and the news seemed to get worse by the hour - but finally some GOOD news - the water level is falling and they're having some success in getting sandbags (3,000 pounds and 20,000 pounds) on the way to fill the breaches in the levees.

I just found a site for pictures

http://www.noaa.gov/

From the website

Quote:
NOAA CONDUCTS AERIAL SURVEY OF REGIONS RAVAGED BY HURRICANE KATRINA
NOAA posted online more than 350 aerial images of the U.S. Gulf Coast areas that were decimated by Hurricane Katrina. NOAA will be flying more missions in the days ahead that will yield hundreds of additional aerial digital images. The regions photographed on Tuesday range from Bay St. Louis to Pascagoula, Miss. The southeast coastal areas of Louisiana are being photographed on Wednesday. The aerial photograph missions were conducted by the NOAA Remote Sensing Division the day after Katrina made landfall at approximately 7:10 a.m. EDT on Aug. 29, 2005, in Plaquemines Parish, La. (Due to intense demand for NOAA aerial images, they are being moved to another server to accommodate the traffic. The site will be back shortly.)
