In thinking about this disaster in NOLA, I wonder, how many cities (regardless of size) have a plan in place for total evacuation? Now before you say "my city is not subject to hurricanes, earthquakes or stuff like that", remember in the Age of Islamic Terrorism, a radiological, nuclear or biological agent could warrant the total evacuation of a city. Hurricanes give warning at least. In the event of a man-made disaster, there would be little or no time to prepare. If the NOLA template is applied, it would take 2-3 days for 80% of the population to flee by private vehicle. That still leaves many behind. The oft ridicled PSAs about having a personal plan in case of a terror attack should now sound like wise words of advice.

Pretty sure that we in the Houston area have one in place, considering all the hurricanes and tropical storms we're frequently subject to. The city has had major flooding in many low lying areas practically every winter for the past few years.

At least, I like to think we're prepared for the worst.

NO had a disaster relief plan, and an evacuation plan! So the next question is: will your local officials follow the plan (do they even know about it?) and not choke like we saw happen last week? That last question is the one that scares me.

For me, I don't care if they have a plan or not. There are too many roads out of town for me to wait for city to come get me. I have camping gear all packed and ready to go in my garage and can pack some clean things in a back pack in minutes.

Living about 50 miles south of Mt. St. Helens, I believe in being prepared. Wink

The business of the day doesn't have to be weather disasters it might take the form of Nuclear 9/11.

You'd need to know what the prevailing winds are and what roads to take to get out of the way. And you have to be ready to, as Terry says, "To Get Out of Dodge".

This New Orleans disaster is staggering, but just imagine if it involved a dirty bomb, nerve agents, biological weapons, or a nuke. This is the kind of scenario that we need to be prepared for. If we are prepared for these disasters then dealing with natural disasters will just come naturally.

C'mon folks. I appreciate the words of self-sufficiency and all, but...

Every community from small to city size has a percentage of people who need help. I'm not talking about the idiots who can get out and won't. I'm talking about the elderly the invalids, etc., i.e., the people who really can't get out without assistance.

So we're all just supposed to cut and run and take care of ourselves, huh?

Please rethink those responses.

Well in Vegas I think it's a plan of which casino to gamble your last minutes away in. We have two whole highways - no real freeways - and one leads to Utah or California, the other to Reno or Arizona. We already have been nuked to a minor degree back when they did the above ground testing, but in reality there is no where to go from here.

My brain tells me that cat 5 Katrina is bearing down on me. She has a 20' - 30' sea wall and I live below sea level. Perhaps it is time for me to get off my butt for an uphill hike.

Key words: "I live below sea level"..............I guess I missed sumpin. Why not walk out into the ocean, build a sea wall, bail it out and then build a house? Here in the Midwest, we build on high ground. When it rains we watch where the water flows, build a dam and a pond eventually forms, over which our home (on high ground) can overlook.
