Race fears spark St. George ban

LONDON, England (CNN) -- British prison officers who wore a St. George's Cross tie-pin have been ticked off by the jails watchdog over concerns about the symbol's racist connotations.

The pins showing the English flag -- which has often raised hackles due to its connection with the Crusades of the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries -- could be "misconstrued," Chief Inspector of Prisons Anne Owers said in a section on race in a report on a jail in the northern English city of Wakefield.

The banner of St. George, the red cross of a martyr on a white background, was adopted for the uniform of English soldiers during the military expeditions by European powers to recapture the Holy Land from Muslims, and later became the national flag of England.

A section on race relations in Owers' report said: "We were concerned to see a number of staff wearing a flag of St. George tie-pin.

"While we were told that these had been bought in support of a cancer charity there was clear scope for misinterpretation, and Prison Service Orders made clear that unauthorized badges and pins should not be worn."

As one of her formal recommendations Owers said: "Staff should not wear unauthorized badges or pins."

Chris Doyle, director of the Council for the Advancement of Arab-British Understanding, said Tuesday the red cross was an insensitive reminder of the Crusades.

"A lot of Muslims and Arabs view the Crusades as a bloody episode in our history," he told CNN. "They see those campaigns as Christendom launching a brutal holy war against Islam.

"Muslim or Arab prisoners could take umbrage if staff wore a red cross badge. It's also got associations with the far-right. Prison officers should be seen to be neutral."

Doyle added that it was now time for England to find a new flag and a patron saint who is "not associated with our bloody past and one we can all identify with."

These aren't PC creeps; they are "sectarian socialists," aka communists, and they know exactly what they are doing. One of the very first moves of the socialists/communists is to discredit or outlaw religion - particularly the Christian kind. Just show me any socialist state - now or in the past - that tolerated religion! The question is when are people going to wake up to this BS.

GM, Well said...and if I may plagiarize for a minute...
Many of those idiots are still living in the 10th Century, in denial, bent on self destruction, and are Stuck on Stupid, which bears repeating, elaborating, and continuous belittling.

Where is the discussion of the Islamic invasions that reached into Spain and to the gates of Vienna? It was in part a reaction to those brutal and bloody offensives that the Crusades were launched.

Bottom line: Those who are secure in their beliefs are not offended by the mere actions/words/attitudes etc of other people. A great illustration of this concept is the response of a "real" Gold Star Mom to a question about Cindy dishonoring her own son. She said in effect "Cindy can not dishonor her son. Her actions dishonor only herself and her supporters. Casey's honor can not be tarnished." She was so secure in her belief in the honorable sacrifice of Casey and her own son that she could not be bothered to be offended by Cindy.

When I see and hear people of any faith to include Evangelical Christians lashing out because they claim to be personnally offended by trivialities, I wonder about how sure they are about what they believe.

In saying that I am not ignoring the fact that our enemies often fake being offended to play on our inclinations to be civil and cooperative. There is definately a strategy of incrementalism involved. They perceive our desires to please as weaknesses to be exploited and they will chip away wherever they can and take whatever we give them.

In many cases the best defense/offense is to IGNORE THEM. It is often Christian/Conservative outrage at an offensive movie coming out of Hollywood that actually garners more attention (and $s) to the movie than it would otherwise get.

Be sure. Be confident. Do the right thing. Be at peace with who you are and what you believe. They interpret a knowing smile as a condescending putdown and go nuts.

Homesteader...

Words of wisdom fersure, and eloquently stated. My compliments.

"This above all: to thine ownself be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man."
