Abilene chosen at site for new vets cemetery.
ABILENE -- The rolling hills near Lake Fort Phantom have been chosen as the final resting place of those who have served our country.
A 62 acre site on the west side of the lake will be the future site of the state's third veterans cemetery. Construction on the $8 million dollar project will begin next summer and be complete by early 2007.
The federally funded site will follow the state's first veterans cemetery dedicated Wednesday in Killeen and another site under construction in Mission.
This is Abilene Texas, not Kansas.
I thought that this might be of some passing interest here.
No need for a link on this one, this is all that was on the KTXS TV website. |

The Mission, Texas site is very close to my home. The Rio Grande Valley has been waiting a long time for a Vet's Cemetary, the closest one up to now was in San Antonio, 240 miles away. |

The Abilene veterans cemetery is now fully operational. Has been for more than a year.
Very recently, a friend of mine and my Dad was buried there. I had no idea that he was a WWII Vet. He never talked about it or mentioned it that I can remember from the first time that I met him in 1966 til his death in several weeks ago in 2011.
He was in the Army. |
