Ted Kennedy in the Boston Globe: On wiretapping, Bush isn't listening to the Constitution

Mr. Kennedy, you are not exactly Mr. Clean with regards to the Constitution and the rights of pretty young girls to not drown in sunken automobiles.

As always, Mary Jo Kopechne is unavailable for comment due to medical problems. Her condition is stable, however.

The President is on solid Constitutional ground. It's Mr. Kennedy who is, er, floundering.

In Kennedy's case, I think you meant "foundering" not "floundering"....

Merriam-Webster:

Main Entry: foun·der
Pronunciation: 'faun-d&r
Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): foun·dered; foun·der·ing /-d(&-)ri[ng]/
Etymology: Middle English foundren to send to the bottom, collapse, from Middle French fondrer, ultimately from Latin fundus

intransitive senses
1 : to become disabled; especially : to go lame
2 : to give way : COLLAPSE
3 : to become submerged : SINK
4 : to come to grief : FAIL

Well, either is germane I think, although "flounder" apparently grew from "founder". This from Merriam Webster Online:

Quote:
flounder
One entry found for flounder.

Main Entry: 2flounder
Function: intransitive verb
Inflected Form(s): floun·dered; floun·der·ing /-d(&-)ri[ng]/
Etymology: probably alteration of founder
1 : to struggle to move or obtain footing : thrash about wildly
2 : to proceed or act clumsily or ineffectually

And this from The Free Dictionary (Farlex):

Quote:
floun·der 1 (floundr)
intr.v. floun·dered, floun·der·ing, floun·ders
1. To make clumsy attempts to move or regain one's balance.
2. To move or act clumsily and in confusion. See Synonyms at blunder. See Usage Note at founder1.
n.
The act of floundering.

The addition of an image of 'fishiness' to the everyday alcohol-fogged demeanor of Kennedy is, I think, quite appropriate. Very Happy Very Happy
