GM,

It's only fair to tell you I've met and talked with Charles (call me Charlie) Keating my fellow Phoenician more than a few times. He'l gladly tell you he didn't get what he paid for.

I think Charlie got the short end trying do deal with those clowns, especially McCain. The slug tries to deny he had any affiliation the others. I'll bet Keating has a lot to say if you are interested. He's got a life anyway. I think when many of us think of the K5 these days, the focus is on the Senators involved.

NRO Article by Mark Levin

Remember the Keating Five?McCain’s own standards would have hung him.Mr. Levin is also president of the Landmark Legal Foundation.April 5, 2001 9:15 a.m.

For too long, McCain has been given a free pass by the media, which promotes campaign-finance reform to silence other voices, and by his Republican colleagues, who are concerned about alienating McCain given the GOP's tenuous majority in the Senate. In John McCain's America, any politician who accepts a large contribution or gift from a donor, and then takes steps consistent with the donor's interests — even though there is no legal quid pro quo — is corrupt. Well, then, by his own standard, McCain is corrupt. McCain was one of the so-called "Keating Five" senators. He was investigated by the Senate Select Committee on Ethics in 1991 regarding the acceptance of favors from Lincoln Savings & Loan Association (Lincoln) and its owner, Charles H. Keating, Jr. Simply put, the issue was whether McCain and the other senators used their official positions to attempt to pressure Federal Home Loan Bank Board officials to go easy on the troubled institution. Eventually Lincoln went bust, costing depositors and taxpayers millions.

In its final report (November 20, 1991), here is what the Senate Select Committee on Ethics concluded about McCain's conduct: "Mr. Keating, his associates, and his friends contributed $56,000 for Senator McCain's two House races in 1982 and 1984, and $54,000 for his 1986 Senate race. Mr. Keating also provided his corporate plane and/or arranged for payment for the use of commercial or private aircraft on several occasions for travel by Senator McCain and his family, for which Senator McCain ultimately provided reimbursement when called upon to do so. Mr. Keating also allowed Senator McCain and his family to vacation with Mr. Keating and his family, at a home provided by Mr. Keating in the Bahamas, in each of the calendar years 1983 through 1986. "…[F]rom 1984 to 1987, Senator McCain took actions on Mr. Keating's behalf or at his request. The Committee finds that Senator McCain had a basis for each of these actions independent of the contributions and benefits he received from Mr. Keating, his associates and friends. "Based on the evidence available to it, the Committee has given consideration to Senator McCain's actions on behalf of Lincoln. The Committee concludes that, given the personal benefits and campaign contributions he had received from Mr. Keating, Senator McCain exercised poor judgment in intervening with the regulators without first inquiring as to the Bank Board's position in the case in a more routine manner. The Committee concludes that Senator McCain's actions were not improper nor attended with gross negligence and did not reach the level of requiring institutional action against him. The Committee finds that Senator McCain took no further action after the April 9, 1987 meeting when he learned of a criminal referral. "The Committee reaffirms its prior decision that it does not have jurisdiction to determine the issues of disclosure or reimbursement pertaining to flights provided by American Continental Corporation while Senator McCain was a Member of the House of Representatives. The Committee did consider the effect of such on his state of mind and judgment in taking steps to assist Lincoln. "Senator McCain has violated no law of the United States or specific Rule of the United States Senate; therefore, the Committee concludes that no further action is warranted with respect to Senator McCain on the matters investigated during the preliminary inquiry."

McCain was the only Republican implicated in the Keating Five scandal, yet today he lectures his party and his president about "the corrupting influence" of money in politics. He rails against the so-called "wealthy special interests" and their ability to buy access to elected officials, yet this is precisely what the Keating Five scandal was all about. And, of course, under McCain's current standard, a politician who takes a principled position that may benefit a donor is corrupt, even if no law has been violated. The John McCain of old should be thankful that his political fate wasn't determined by John McCain the reformer.

GM,

We've gotten off track from the original thread about Harry. But, Charlie is a subject I'm happy to wax eloquent on.

You mis-conscrew me thinking Keating got the short end of the stick. His claim to fame was as an Olympic swimmer. Then he was an anti-pornographer for Nixon or some such. Before I met him he'd cost my friends, officers in a small bank in Glendale, Ca their careers when he bought Lincoln (I met him after his demise and he ouldn't remember one of them). He was an arrogant fool presuming free depositor's money would offset his self-inflating costs on projects like the Phonecian and Crescent hotels. He didn't anticipate downturns and had no reserves. His 'vision' missed a decade of reverse.

I recall only 4 of the "Five": Glenn, cheated the deserving Chuck Yeager for the 'old man in space' by sabotaging a senate/Clinton inquiery. Cranston....was Cranston and recieved the highest dollar value. DeConcinni of Az. had Bonanno on his Rollodex and had burned Babbit's campaign offices during a '76 primary to make the point. McCain (did I tell you I was a POW) was deemed the least culpable because he'd received the least cash. Unmentioned were the holidays on Bahamian beaches with Keating jet-rides.

John (did I tell you I was a POW) McCain has learned to take 'in kind'. Qwest provided aircraft before the 'Telecommunications Act'. His Cornville property is largely expropriated from his neighbors. Like J F'n Kerry he's serially married greater wealth...the last the daughter of Budweiser's biggest distributer west of the Mississippi (Their slogan: Good Neighbors since Prohibition). He holds Barry Goldwater's seat. I hate to bust bubbles but good old Barry was bent, but even he found John (did I tell you I was a POW) McCain repugnant. The Az. state Republicans agree but John (did I tell you I was a POW) McCain gets his local support from RINOs and ossifying Dems. Hell, I vote against the SOB every chance I get.

I was waxing a bit cynical and agree with you. Only thing is, McCain is still in politics. The others are out and Cranston is with his maker. Keating is doing whatever he is doing. It is McCain's turn to retire.

Dingy Harry Reid and his cabal, if by McCain standards are corrupt, should all resign. How about it Senator McCain??

Late breaking on Dingy: On Brit tonight, Reid was quoted as saying he was not giving back the Abramoff money. "This is a Republican scandal and I'm not involved"[paraphrased], said he.

The utter gall of these people continues to be misunderestimated. Rolling Eyes

Reid is making a mistake, which will definately benefit the Republicans. Reid is counting on a shield from the MSM, yet this is no longer the shield of invulnerability it once was.

The msm certainly is tryting to make it a Republican scandal. However, Sean Hannity said someting on his program but didn't elaborate. He said that is it said that Abramoff is a "republican" fundraiser. Sean said he is not, he is a Democrat fund raiser. I don't know if Sean just threw that out or if he really is a Democrat who tries to bribe Republicans to go along with what he is lobbying.

I too thought Abramoff to be a Republican. Which is it?

Ohio,

Abramoff is a sociopath who cares only for himself and is without the ability to think in terms of principle. He is nothing more than an opportunist. The problem Ohio, is many people who are our supposed leaders are without principle as well.

We ask young warriors to go into battle, yet leave principle at the door as we close it? We are at war right now.

It is world war III, and our enemy loves our weakness of self indulgence. We must re-embrace what America was founded upon and that is a love of religous freedom. If our enemy wants a caliphate, which persecutes women, children and men of other faith then we must kill them all.

We must be principled as we carry out the task. We must raise the bar of our leadership and no longer accept weak sociopaths for positions of power.

We also need to make serving our country as a politician something of respect and honor. We have become jaded in our views of our leaders and this must change.

Corruption must change yes. But so far there is only "Republicans" that are corrupt according to Democrats and MSM. It is pre-election hype. Paloci has been saying there is a 'culture of corruption" in "this administration" long before Delay was removed . [A political witch hunt] Now Abramoff supposeidly is naming "Republicans". I am not buying it. So called corruption may be in some politicians. It is not party related.

This current "cleaning house" is a Democrat led political plan to take back the majority. If you can't see that...
