“Get out if you want Sharia law," Australia tells Muslims………
CANBERRA: Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia, as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks. A day after a group of mainstream Muslim leaders pledged loyalty to Australia at a special meeting with Prime Minister John Howard, he and his ministers made it clear that extremists would face a crackdown.
Treasurer Peter Costello, seen as heir apparent to Howard, hinted that some radical clerics could be asked to leave the country if they did not accept that Australia was a secular state and its laws were made by parliament. “If those are not your values, if you want a country which has Sharia law or a theocratic state, then Australia is not for you,” he said on national television. “I’d be saying to clerics who are teaching that there are two laws governing people in Australia, one the Australian law and another the Islamic law, that that is false.
If you can’t agree with parliamentary law, independent courts, democracy, and would prefer Sharia law and have the opportunity to go to another country which practices it, perhaps, then, that’s a better option,” Costello said. Asked whether he meant radical clerics would be forced to leave, he said those with dual citizenship could possibly be asked to move to the other country.
Education Minister Brendan Nelson later told reporters that Muslims who did not want to accept local values should “clear off”. “Basically, people who don’t want to be Australians, and they don’t want to live by Australian values and understand them, well then they can basically clear off,” he said. Separately, Howard angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spies monitoring the nation’s mosques.

How I'd love to see the Pres. stand up and declare that statement for America.
Way to go Australia. No wishy-washy mealymouthed sentiments being expressd down under. Shows just what they think of 'political correctness'.
They got it right.

Sounds good, it's too bad they still have gun control, not unlike Nazi Germany. |

Hey AMOS it is a country founded by convicts and a member of the British Commonwealth. The "Crown" does not like citizens carrying guns.

Lexington and Concord, didn't they. _________________ Tin Can Sailor |

The thing is as this war goes on..... which it will for quite some time, this Aussie P.M. is going to stand out like Churchill in WWII.
He is very well spoken and seems to know a thing or two about telling the difference between a spade, and dull knife, how to describe them each as such. |

The current government of Oz under the leadership of the likes of Howard and Costello is a solid ally of the US. However, there is a sizeable population of lefties there. I run into them frequently on our Apple computer help forums. They seem to have emerged from years of fighting their government over perceived mistreatment of the Aboriginal population and are violently anti-American for any number of reasons.
Sometimes our discussions start getting hot enough that the Apple moderators force us off into email exchanges or onto a more 'liberal' forum out of New Zealand.
The Howard government is still influenced by positive recollections of the support of the US in WWII, without which Oz could not have survived or at least would have suffered major hits. That generation will eventually pass on and the future government posture will undoubtedly swing leftward.
There is a transcript of an Australian Broadcasting Company TV interview by a 'reporter' and Costello done in August, 2005 HERE. It's somewhat long but further illustrates the tenacity of the government even in the face of a somewhat hostile interview.

We better wake up to our own problem. Notably, banks in Ann Arbor, Michigan that are looking at issuing mortgages based on Sharia Law. Where is the ACLU and the MSM on this. The silence is deafening. _________________ 8th Army Korea 68-69 |

Schadow; I'd have to agree with the above assessment regarding Aussie/Kiwi culture .
I'm on my 34th year married to an Aussie with property, family down under and 30 +/- trips to the country in the last 35 years. I've noticed a big change down there since the Vietnam war with plenty of left-wing broadcasters, journalist, groups coupled with a pacifist view of things. Even the WWII generation has started to look at the US as a trouble maker further complicating this great country's potential problems.
Water-locked but perhaps one of the most vulnerable places on earth with only 20 million people(size of so.CA)and a land mass approximating about 85% of the US. Vulnerable from what country: non other than the Indonesian muslims entering the country yearly at an astounding rate. Plenty of social programs and an adequate standard of living capitalism is doing quite for now. I look for more problems in the country coming from world globalization.
My Aussie relatives contend that most of Australia is desert and no one would reside in the area. Answer,"what do you think Nevada,So.Calif,Arizona,New Mexico,Texas, other use to be"?
Certainly like seeing the Aussie stance on Muslims imported culture but feel the PC police will change this in the future. _________________ Tin Can Gunline Vietnam

Any links that might enlighten us?
That sounds highly entertaining ... right up BOR's alley, or Greta, if she can pull herself away from missing person cases. |
