WASHINGTON - New White House Press Secretary Tony Snow is starting off in a combative mode against the press by issuing detailed rebuttals to what he considers unfair coverage of Bush.

“The New York Times continues to ignore America’s economic progress,” blared the headline of an e-mail sent to reporters Wednesday by the White House press office.

Minutes earlier, another e-mail blasted CBS News, which has had an unusually rocky relationship with the White House since 2004, when CBS aired what turned out to be forged documents in a failed effort to question the president’s military service.

“CBS News misleadingly reports that only 8 million seniors have signed up for Medicare prescription drug coverage,” Wednesday’s missive said. “But 37 million seniors have coverage.” On Tuesday, the White House railed against “USA Today’s misleading Medicare story.”

“USA Today claims ‘poor, often minority’ Medicare beneficiaries are not enrolling in Medicare drug coverage,” the press office complained. “But by April, more than 70 percent of eligible African Americans, more than 70 percent of eligible Hispanics, and more than 75 percent of eligible Asian Americans are enrolled or have retiree drug coverage.”

White House sources said Snow, who started on the job Monday and has yet to give his first public press briefing, is determined to aggressively counter what the administration considers unfair assertions in both news and editorials about Bush. At the same time, he is eager to make the notoriously secretive administration more accessible to the press.

Tony Snow has apparently elected to come out swinging, and it's LONG overdue. Hopefully everyone here will keep a sharp eye out for notification of his first sortie into the WH briefing room...should be some captivating viewing.

Yep. After those emails, the long knives will be out for sure. I think Tony will do an admirable job there. McClellan is such a wuss.

Well, Reuters takes the first shot:

Tony Snow blinks after first look at press corps

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New White House spokesman Tony Snow got his first eyeball-to-eyeball look at the beast known as the White House press corps on Friday -- and it was Snow who blinked.

A herd of reporters forced Snow to abandon plans to hold his morning briefing in his West Wing office, where he had hoped for a more informal gathering, and return it to the press briefing room, where it has been held since the aftermath of the September 11 attacks.

And Snow quickly acknowledged that another standard feature of the daily midday White House news briefing -- live television coverage -- was here to stay, at least for now.

"I have a feeling the televised briefings are not something that you can undo," Snow said.

Interest was high among the press corps in attending Snow's first morning "gaggle," and reporters were so crammed into his office they barely had elbow space to write in their note pads.

Some 16 reporters were unable to even get into the office, prompting those way in the back to shout for him to speak up.

One problem was the morning session was scheduled for 9 a.m. (1300 GMT), was switched to 9:30 a.m., then apparently started early at 9:15 a.m.

"Well, I apologize," a chastened Snow said. "That's just flat my fault."

Pressed on whether he had severed his ties to the Fox News Channel, where he served as a weekend anchor and radio talk show host, Snow said he had no connection with Fox anymore, never owned stock in Fox's parent company and "there's absolutely no agreement for further employment, no right of first refusal, no nothing."

Snow replaced Scott McClellan as press secretary about a week ago and has been boning up on issues before holding his first televised briefing, now scheduled for Tuesday.

Additionally, I've heard that Tony somewhat bombed by not having been briefed adequately for some questions, but haven't found that yet. Of course, the press conference is all about Tony, not the pressing problems of the day.
