In spite of vigorous Administration support of his successful Senate re-nomination win, Lincoln Chafee was the sole "Republican" to vote against the President's detainee bill in the Senate yesterday.
I think it is entirely possible that this RINO will, upon reelection, declare himself to be an Independent in the mode of Jim Jeffords.
If this happens, a possible scenario is a Senate with 49 Republicans, 49 Democrats and 2 Independents, depending on how the rest of the election goes.
In January, the Senate will vote on the position of Majority Leader. Would the newly "Independent" Chafee vote for Reid? You know Jeffords will. That this RINO, Chafee, could weasel himself into such a powerful bargaining position is maddening.
In a somewhat related development, Representative Mark Foley, R-Fl, resigned today over an allegation that he had a "thing" going with a 16 year-old male House page. This is an automatic loss of the Republican seat in that district, dropping the magic number for Dem control of the House from 15 to 14.
Not a good day.

EDIT: Oops. I forgot Lieberman, another Independent (if he wins). Maybe he'll become a Republican. What a tangled web. _________________ Capt, 8th U.S. Army, Korea '53 - '54 |

Hey Schadow,
Joe Lieberman is a decent and honest man with a love of America. He supports the troops and can be trusted, but he's still a liberal. If he joined the GOP he'd be a Liberal Republican and he'd be a wild card on many issues. Still, it would swing the balance.
