Break with (Boring!) Politics-As-Usual - Nurses' 89 Music Video Release

NEW POP SINGLE: An anti-corruption message you can dance to – About Time for 89

Groundbreaking Strategy

The Proposition 89 campaign, a measure to curb political corruption and upend Sacramento, today releases About Time for 89, a new rap for reform of California politics. About Time for 89 is being released online and to radio stations. It will reach voters in an entirely new way – from their feet up.

A video and mp3 of the song, written, produced and performed by Colette Washington can be downloaded from the Yes on 89 website – www.Yeson89.org.

About Time for 89 links the corrosive influence of big money power and political corruption in Sacramento, with the consequences for everyday Californians.

As the song says:

It's about time for Prop. 89

What's goin' on in Sac Town is blowin' my mind

"Big Boys Club" by grand design

Are leaving Californians far behind

Cause in Sac Town - you have to pay to play

Thanks for your vote but you just can't stay

All you big money boys with all the big green

Take a message: it's time to come clean

Politicians and big money power

Are tucked away in an ivory tower

Called the Capitol - they got it up for sale

But they're breakin' the law and goin' to jail

Political corruption is on the rise

Donations are comin' in super-size

Californians need a little bit of love

But we can't get in to the "Big Boys Club"

Can't get health if you don't have wealth

Can't fix schools if we don't have tools

Can't afford the gas, to fill up the tank

Big Boys are takin' us to the bank

Proposition 89 is real reform

The corporations hate it like a lover's scorn

They want freedom - to buy politicians

Of course they would rather keep with tradition

“For most voters, October in an election year is the time to reach for the Pepto-Bismol – horrible ads!” said Michael Lighty, campaign manager for Yes on 89. “The nurses’ cure is to cut through with Prop. 89 and this music video.”

Prop. 89 changes the broken system of campaign finance in this state that contributes to the widespread corruption in government. The initiative 89 places strict limits on political contributions by corporations, unions, and individuals. Prop. 89 also bans contributions from lobbyists and state contractors to candidates, and sets up a system of “clean,” or public, financing for political campaigns that will allow candidates to give up private fundraising. Prop. 89 contains strong enforcement mechanisms, meaning that if politicians break the law, they can end up in jail.
