Steve Irwin, Croc Guy, Rest In Peace
A stingray’s barbed tail struck Steve’s heart this morning and efforts to save his life failed. With his death, the world loses one of the good guys and Discovery channel one of its last remaining decent performers. A few years ago Steve was criticized for holding his newborn son while feeding a crocodile, yet did anyone criticizing him really understand the dangers or were they merely reflective of a society hostile towards masculinity. To my eyes Steve was beginning the process of making a man out of his little boy, while those critical of Steve seemed to be men and women with their panties on too tight. It is interesting how someone such as Jesse James who also performs for the Discovery channel and Steve Irwin are such a marked contrast in the world we live in today. While Steve is criticized for the implied danger he placed his child in, no one has said anything about the damage Jesse James is doing to his children while the world watches their sorry tale unfold.
Jesse James has been on Discovery channel for 3 years and during year one divorced his wife. Year two saw Jesse marry a porn star. Year three Jesse divorced porn star and married a washed up Hollywood actress. Year four is now commencing and surely will culminate in the divorce to the actress. James is nothing more then a tattooed man of limited intelligence who is frustrated. Discovery channel realized early on he couldn’t build bikes relative to the industry so they found the Tuttle family to replace him, yet thought they had a personality with James so gave him his Monster Garage platform to brood and sigh. A sign of the times when the boorish and petulant adolescence of James is marketable to an audience.
Steve Irwin is a family man of strong character and chivalry in a time and world in desperate need of it. He has often been criticized by feminists of chauvinism in the way he handles animals in wife Terri’s presence, yet he simply protects the woman he serves from unnecessary danger. This type of chivalry has been under attack for decades and when displayed the common response from ugly women is male pig. Where is the outcry from women about Jesse James treatment of women during the last three years and the assured damage done to his children? You will never hear any because James is their ideal man.
Steve Irwin didn’t need tattoo’s to cover his insecurities nor did he need to brood about grievances because he had none. He was confident in his abilities to a level which gave him happiness without frustration. He was a good family man who leaves behind a wife, son and daughter.
He will be missed greatly by all. _________________ "An activist is the person who cleans up the water, not the one claiming its dirty."

I have always liked Steve too, GenrXr.
He loved the animals he worked with and was doing what he loved when he died. I will miss him. _________________ “I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. ‘Tis the business of little minds to shrink; but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death.” (Thomas Paine, 1776) |

One of a kind. Bigger than life itself.
Big Lizards has a short but interesting post on him.
Its interesting to see how the various MSM reports describe this unique person. Enviromentalist, naturalist, adventurer, apparently conservationist doesn't work for them.
Anyway, we are a bit poorer today. RIP Steve |

Anyone who knew him or watched him on tv knew he was a special sort of guy. A real one of a kind who was fascinated by the animals he understood so well.
He will be missed by many, many people. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and children.
And a stingray of all things. I was always expecting it to be a snake bite or croc. that got him.

Irwin described himself as a conservationist. The difference between that and an environmentalist is subtle, but conservationists normally have a brain in their heads and don't march to protest every new business breaking ground near some protected patch of weeds.
He was a very family oriented guy and I could always be sure that my kids were watching family entertainment if Steve was on.
I wonder if his last words were "Crikey!"

Steve Irwin's untimely death is definitely a real loss. My son was so upset when my husband and I told him he died today. BuffaloJack said, "He was a very family oriented guy and I could always be sure that my kids were watching family entertainment if Steve was on." When Steve was on you could leave the room and rest assured their would be no surprises, except of the animal kind.
I also agree wholeheartedly with BuffaloJack's characterization of Steve as a conservationist, not an environmentalist. Well said and the subtle difference is duly noted.
May he rest in peace. _________________

I think my Wife has the best epithet
Nature is neither good nor bad, it just Is
My Wife was very upset that someone who cared so much about our
planet died. But thinking about it she realized that it was just
the natural course of Nature.
The Stingray did exactly what it should have done when threatened.
It fought back.
I regret it ended Steve's life but it is a fact of Nature. |

Very true, Norton. We can appreciate animals and view them, from a safe distance. No need to abuse them but we need to remember, they are Wild Animals who react from instinct.
A tragic loss, but much like the guy that cozied up to Grizzly Bears a couple years ago and ended up being their lunch one day, we need to remember they are not pets.
He will be missed and my sincerest condolences go out to his family. _________________ Clark County Conservative |

Sure didn't think last nights news coverage gave Irwin an adequate send-off. Reproof, correction and critique alone dominated with no mention of his internationally known conservationist efforts.
There is a big difference in a conservationist and environmental activists!!!
Wife and I visited his Queensland animal park in Australia in 02. My brother in law(Vietnam Vet) is helo pilot and manager of the search and rescue in Cairns,Queensland" currently we have emails off for details of this tragedy.
Will post if other details are available. _________________ Tin Can Gunline Vietnam

Latest on Fox says the video captured it all. Steve apparently pulled the spike out himself.
Very sad loss for animal conservation. _________________ "The most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government and I’m here to help." Ronald Reagan

Here it is:
Hi. Have just got home from work & got your message. It was the Emergency Management Rescue Helicopter (Spida’s) that went out to Steve Irwin but Spida wasn’t flying it. He had just finished the night shift & had handed over to the next pilot.
Isn’t it sad? I am devastated. He was such a terrific icon for Australia and so full of life. Everyone here can’t believe it. You know, it could have got him anywhere like the leg or stomach, but it went straight into his heart. Life is so delicate isn’t it. He will be very much missed here in Aussie land.
There are rumors here in Kentucky that Steve Irwin would have not died if he had not pulled the stinger out, however, my sister tells me that even when they got the call nothing was said about it being Irwin and that early on the report was that this person was not going to survive. _________________ Tin Can Gunline Vietnam

This bizzare story is in a way somekind of strange postscript to the sad end of Steve Irwin.
Quote: | MIAMI (AFP) - An elderly Florida man was in a stable condition after a stingray jumped onto his boat and stuck its barb into his chest, officials said.
...
Officials at the Broward General Hospital said Bertakis was in a stable condition Thursday, after surgeons removed the barb that had punctured his heart.
|
This guy was just sitting in a boat. He wasn't trying to risk life and limb.
Sh#t happens. |
