Bush has really lost his mind and I think his father has taken over the Presidency. The downhill spiral started when Sandy Burglar got away destroying 911 records from the archive. The spiral continued a couple months ago when the truth finally came out about the Plame Game and instead of holding Powell and others to task, Bush said and did nothing.

Now, a few days before a critical election, Bush lied when told the media Rumsfield was not going anywhere. Instead of firing Rumsfield before the election which might have helped the final outcome, he announed it the day after a Republican major election defeat. He should have given Nancy Pelosi a tour of the White House while he was at it so she knows how to get around the place just in case she tries to impeach him and Cheney as well. The tale between his legs couldn't go up any further anyways.

Just when you think Republican Conservative voters could finally get up from under their rock, Bush throws a boulder at them and squashes them completely by nominating Robert Gates to run the Pentagon. Well, now we're mad and Bush better watch out because Conservatives are now mad as hell and are not going to let Bush Senior take over the country again.

BTW, this is the same Gates involved in Iran-Contra. Doesn't Bush have enough problems that he now wants to add Iran Contra to the pile too. The current President Bush policy has been thrown away and daddy is going to fix it for him by doing what he does best which is the policy of appeasement starting with Iran.

If you don't believe me, just read the Council on Foreign Relations Report below that was co-chaired by none other than Robert Gates.

ASSESSMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

"The United States’ long lack of direct contact with, and presence in, Iran drastically impedes its understanding of Iran’s domestic, as well as regional, dynamics. In turn, this reduces Washington’s influence across the Middle East in ways that are manifestly harmful to its ultimate interests. Direct dialogue approached candidly and without restrictions on issues of mutual concern would serve Iran’s interests. And establishing connections with Iranian society would directly benefit U.S. national objectives of enhancing the stability and security of this critical region. Dialogue between the United States and Iran need not await absolute harmony between the two governments.Throughout history, Washington has maintained cordial and constructive relations with regimes whose policies and philosophies have differed significantly from its own, including, above all, in its relationship with the Soviet Union. By its very definition, diplomacy seeks to address issues between nations, and so it would be unwise (and unrealistic) to defer contact with Tehran until all differences between the two governments have evaporated."

"In dealing with Iran, the United States should relinquish the rhetoric of regime change. Such language inevitably evokes the problematic history of U.S. involvement with the 1953 coup that unseated Iranian Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadeq. For these reasons, propounding regime change simply invites nationalist passions that are clearly unconstructive to the cause such a policy would seek to serve.Rather,Washington’s positions and policies must clearly communicate to the government and citizens of Iran that the United States favors political evolution: the long-range vision is an Iran that ushers in democracy itself in a meaningful and lasting manner."

"Over the longer term, U.S. interests in achieving peace and stability in the Persian Gulf would be best served by engaging Iran and each of its neighbors in a dialogue aimed at establishing an effective organization to promote regional security and cooperation. Such an organization could be structured to provide a forum for regional dialogue, confidence-building measures, economic cooperation, conflict prevention, and crisis management."

Oh please. What was he supposed to say prior to the election? "If we lose, I'll fire Rumsfeld" even though that was probably the case? There's a world of a difference between political posturing, which is the nature of the political beast, and "lying". Most of us understand that.

As to Gates' track record, while his pedigree and posturing is unsettling, there's been a LOT of water down the Tigris and Euphrates since July 2004. Nor has he been designated Secretary of State. I'll save the hyperbole for a later day (if and when needed) and continue to support the President as the new dynamics of our Iraq commitment take form.

Looks like I'm not the only one who sees what's happening.

Bush 41 Seems Back on Scene in D.C.

Thursday , November 09, 2006

By John Gibson

You see George H. W. Bush around the White House lately?

"No," you say? "G. W. Bush is the president."

He sure is, but daddy Bush appears to be back on the scene.

George H. W. Bush is back in the White House in the form of Jim Baker, who is on the commission looking for a new direction in Iraq, and Brent Scowcroft, who counseled against the Iraq war, and Bob Gates, who as recently as 2004 wrote that the U.S. should sit down with Iran to iron out issues relating to Iraq, nukes and the rest.

Last time the daddy Bush crowd had the president's ear was Colin Powell, and he eventually left in a huff. He's still mad.

But now Rummy is gone and Cheney may not have the dominant hand he once had. We'll have to see how that works out.

The old George H. W. Bush crowd of realists — not idealists or ideologues, but realists — they're back and seem to be in the ascendancy. They were happy to leave Saddam alone in Baghdad, and they're being asked to figure out what to do now.

Odd this should happen now because it also seems to be the moment when the Clinton crowd is back in control of the Democrats. Gone are the loser days of Gore and Kerry.

The Dem winners are back and doing exactly the same things that made them winners last time. Remember triangulation? The art of co-opting your opponents' issues? Bubba did it with welfare, and now Rahm Emanuel has done it with Dem candidates for Congress.

You are pro-gun, anti-abortion, and you hate hearing the military dumped on? In 2006 that made you a good candidate to run as a Democrat, and a bunch of them got elected.

So here we are again with daddy Bush against Bubba Clinton. It's feeling like 1991 all over again.

That's My Word.

Unbelievable! I've always operated from the philosophy that one should not abandon ship, when sharks are circling the ship, unless and until you're sure that lifeboats are at the ready and in the water - even if the ship is a rust bucket.

When for whatever the reason the American electorate handed most of the reins of power to the Democrats last week, WE LOST. Things changed, and radically. That situation is locked-in for at least two years. And the current situtation is going to require compromises on some issues, unless the issue is better left at gridlock. (I, for one, am not willing to let our servicepeople in Iraq become the pawns of a political gridlock.)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but G.W. Bush heads the only branch of Government that remains in any way in right-of-center hands - both houses of Congress have flipped, and the Court is better but still in liberal control.

Discontents can firmly resolve to never vote for G.W. Bush again, of course (and the rest of us will have no choice but to go along). But in the meantime, he is our President for the next two years - unless impeached (which would move Pelosi one step closer to being the President).

So to those who've decided that now is the time to show BDS from the right, what is the responsible alternative? What is your recommendation? Do you honestly think that trash-talking Bush is in any way going to help him to beat back the liberal left's initiatives in the next two years? Endless b****ing may be therapeutic for the individual, but it doesn't solve anything real, and it damned sure can hurt.

Gates' nomination sure has lit up some heated discussions on internet forums & blogs. Much speculation, but, the only one that really knows the intent, is W. Saw one comment that this could be a trojan horse,, also that W made the Rummy decision back in September, and that it would have happened whichever way the election went

Gates will be heavily involved with implementing the recommendations of the Baker/Hamilton Iraq Study Group. Baker/Hamilton were to do a conference call with Tony Blair to get his persepective.....

Well Tony Blair, John Howard, and Romania's President, have all gone on record (after the election) as vowing to keep troops in Iraq untill they could handle their own security. It wouldn't seem that with other world leaders saying that they are staying, that the US would be doing a cut/run.

Mayhaps W chose Gates precisely because of the long standing ties, as someone he could trust. Will have to wait and see how W plays this hand out..

skerry and the libs are still whining about 60,000 votes in Ohio in '94. Well 60,000 votes in '06 would have kept the Senate in GOP hands and even increased the majority in the House. But that is not how conservatibe think and behave. There are no demands for recounts, no threats of law-suits, no stories of vote tampering and voter intimidation. We lick our wounds, shake ourselves off, assess the situation and and move on. We did that when Bubba won two elections with less than 50% of the vote and eventually took both houses.

There is plenty to be dissatisfied with regarding the squandering of the opportunity by the GOP while they had the majority but it would be a mistake to over react to the last election by abandoning the President altogether. The Dem hold on the Senate is fragile and the House has become even more conservative. With some finesse on the part of the President a more conservative coalition may hold sway. W is pragmatic and is not obsessed with his legacy rather is focused on the doable.

We may be surprised to see less damage being done than when we had Chaffee and Jefferds and the like obstructing things. What the President needs is some confidence that we will not turn a razor thin minority status into a route of our principles by jumping ship.
