|
|
A few years ago I took a very close look at the ribbons Kerry had on his "uniform" during his Fullbright committee testimony. If memory serves me correctly, some were out of order and some were not Navy ribbons.
Does anyone have a breakdown of exactly what ribbons he wore? The photos that are now posted on the web are so low in resolution it is hard to tell. _________________ Doc Ford

Doc -
This is what I wrote on 2 Nov concerning Kerry's fatigue ribbons in a thread which had a picture of Kerry and Kennedy. I'm afraid I'm as mystified as you about Kerry's ribbon shopping and probably adds nothing to your quest.
Quote: | .... What's equally mystifying to me is the number of ribbons he's wearing. My eyesight tells me he's wearing four rows totalling eleven. The SS and PH in the top row, the BS is the first ribbon in the second row. For the rest of them, I can only account for Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and RVN Campaign Medal. That's six. If there were a Unit Citation of any kind, it would be worn separately.
Was he awarded hero medals of some kind by the RVN? Even then it's questionable whether they should be worn on a U.S. uniform and certainly not on fatigues. Anyway, that's quite a haul for 3+months.
It would interesting for any of you who were in-country 'Nam to look at your DD-214s and see if any RVN medals are shown.
I can't help but think of Adm. Boorda, CNO, who shot himself when a reporter noticed and just had to publish the fact that Boorda was wearing a "V" device [or possibly a battle star; can't remember which - ed.] improperly.

Awhile back, I requested a copy of my records and the Corps issued a DD-215, which is a correction to the DD-214.
It shows...
Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 1 bronze star, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation (Gallatry Cross Color with palm and frame), Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation (Civil Actions Color with palm and frame), and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
The last three are all RVN medals. |

In the photo of him seated at the Committee hearing in '71 he is wearing eleven ribbons. They appear to be:
Top row (2) - SS, BSM
Next row (3) - PH, CAR, PUC
Third row (3) - NUC, National Defense, VSM
Bottom row(3) - Marksman (rifle), Marksman (pistol), Viet Nam Campaign
Hope this helps. |

That's a lotta lettuce for 4 months.
He musta been some sort of hero. _________________ "If he believes his 1971 indictment of his country and his fellow veterans was true, then he couldn't possibly be proud of his Vietnam service." |

Couple questions:
These unit citations, PUC and NUC? Were they awarded to his cruiser or the Swift Boats?
When I was in watch standers and rovers had to qualify twice a year with 45, shotgun and M14. These quals couldn't be used for a ribbon. If you wanted the marksmen salad you had to schedule time on the range and buy your own bullets. I don't recall any who bothered. ESWS or SWO were the combat badges sailors wanted. Am I seeing this wrong?
I'm a little surprised. Blue roped Flag Lts can add a bar of fruit salad for a few minutes of paperwork. When Kerry went to the logistics command I'ld have thought he done so......maybe he did. _________________ "KILL ALL THE LAWYERS!"
