My favorite quality in Rumsfeld was that the enemy hated him. _________________ Swift Boats - Qui Nhon (12/69-4/70), Cat Lo (4/70-5/70), Vung Tau (5/70-12/71) |

And "the enemy" was often the press.
I really liked how he could tell the whole world that a reporter was dumb as box of rocks without ever saying anything unkind. And he did that at least once at almost every briefing. His briefings were more entertaining than anyone since GEN Schwarzkopf.
Reporters want to know everything you'll tell them. But they don't need to know a tenth of what they they think they need to know. And they certainly don't have a right to know most of what they ask. I hope the next SECDEF is as good at making monkeys out of reporters as he was.
It's going to be a long time before the verdicts are in on the handling of the war in Iraq - but I think Donald Rumsfeld is honorable and did the best he could do to serve the country under very difficult circumstances. I'm sorry to see him go and I hope we don't waste what has already been accomplished over there. _________________ ~ Echo Juliet ~

Gates will be a disaster. He ran death squads and torture teams for CIA. Now it looks like he'll run the retreat for James Baker. |
