Some might recall a news item addressed in this forum, a report that Marvin Kalb of the Harvard Shorenstein Center (and former CBS/NBC News heavyweight) had undertaken a research project with an eye towards publication of "a book that will include commentary on the effectiveness and the credibility of the Swift Boat Veterans For Truth."
I'll confess that I had my doubts as to both Mr. Kalb's motivations and his biases (and still do...he was "Rather"-friendly), but he appears to have held "journalism's" collective feet to the fire, at least in reference to media's failure to uphold journalistic standards of neutrality in their coverage of the 2006 hezbollah/Israeli conflict.
Whether Mr. Kalb's SVPT/Kerry research is still a "work in progress" is unknown, but I'm tempted to edit the following review of his most recent publication substituting "Kerry" for hezbollah and Swiftvets for "Israel" at each mention in the hopes that the product of Mr. Kalb's Kerry/SVPT "investigation" might read in a, somewhat surprisingly, similar fashion...

While the war between Israel and Hezbollah raged in Lebanon and Israel last summer, it became clear that media coverage had itself started to play an important role in determining the ultimate outcome of that war. It seemed clear that news coverage would affect the course of the conflict. And it quickly transpired that Hezbollah would become the beneficiary of the media's manipulation.
A close examination of the media's role during the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war in Lebanon comes now from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, in an analysis of the war published in a paper whose subtitle should give pause to journalists covering international conflict: "The Israeli-Hezbollah War of 2006: The Media as a Weapon in Asymmetrical Conflict." Marvin Kalb, of Harvard's Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy, methodically traces the transformation of the media "from objective observer to fiery advocate." Kalb painstakingly details how Hezbollah exercised absolute control over how journalists portrayed its side of the conflict, while Israel became "victimized by its own openness."
The lessons from the Harvard paper go well beyond historic analysis. Kalb's thoroughly and persuasively documented case points to the challenges to journalists in future "asymmetrical" conflicts in which a radical militia provides access only to journalists agreeing to the strictest of rules.
Journalists did Hezbollah's work, offering little resistance to the Islamic militia's effort to portray itself as an idealistic and heroic army of the people, facing an aggressive and ruthless enemy.

| Anyone taking bets as to whether this will in any way be reported in the MSM, much less discussed in those venues? Betcha the only place you'll see this is on web sites like this one. |

That's a given, isn't it? I would absolutely faint if any news media covered this report.
In fact, I had to sit down just at realizing that this story is coming out of HARVARD!
It got covered on the blogs - almost in real time. Remember the faked pictures?
What surprises me is that academia caught on to it at all.
This MSM support for Hiz b'allah was not an abstract concept, it was not an "ideal world" situation - it was concrete and easily visible to the most casual observer.
It shocks me that Harvard would even deign to take a second look, much less that they would print a report unfavorable to the media.
