Here's an interesting historical footnote on an American Catholic response to Hitler's persecution of the Jews...
Quote: | A Recording of U.S. Catholic Protests Against Hitler in November 1938 Turns Up in Catholic University Archives [Michael Novak]
A major archival discovery is a 1938 recording of a national Catholic broadcast against Hitler’s treatment of the Jews six days after Kristallnacht ended. This radio program was carried live on both NBC and CBS radio on November 16, 1938. Participants in the program were Al Smith (former presidential candidate and governor of New York), and three Catholic bishops from around the nation. Catholic University of America archivists discovered the audio recording of this broadcast in an old box. One speaker in the broadcast said “in the face of such injustice toward the Jews of Germany, I express my revulsion, disgust and grief.” The others added similar condemnations. The CUA Magazine carried this story in its November 2007 edition. The article and the recording can be found here.

And just shy of one year later, Germany invaded Poland.
While this find is quite amazing it is also a poignant reminder that just words will not turn a country from a course of inhumane intolerance nor will a policy of isolationism as even now spouted by the Ron Paul sycophants do anything more than encourage such actions.
69 years ago we didn't have the United Nations but a similar group called the League of Nations which was equally powerless to prevent the most horrific episode in history. As Benito Mussolini stated "The League is very well when sparrows shout, but no good at all when eagles fall out." so too is the current association of bombastic bloviators who attempt control through unenforceable sanctions.
Those who fail to learn from or simply ignore history will continue to be surprised as the world was in 1939 and unfortunately, will continue to voice their outrage AFTER the fact. The warnings were there well before Kristallnacht yet it still took the invasion of a country to wake most of the populace up. What is the greatest shame for the U.S. is it took another two years and over 3000 of our own citizens' deaths for us to fully wake to the fact.
Why my vent? Just take the events, place them to the southeast with the center in Iraq and Iran and the timelines are pretty much similar. EXCEPT, this time we took action despite the isolationistic blubberings. We'll never know what would have happened but we darn well are sure we stopped some of what COULD have happened.

P.S. Hey, why has the MSM dropped the phrase "Gravitas"? Considering the experience of the current batch of candidates it seems a shoe-in for a phrase to be used. Could it be the candidate's party? Nah. _________________ Why ask? Because it needs asking. |
