For the life of me, I don't understand how this article from "Agence France-Presse" managed to find a home at Newsmax.com. Admittedly, I rarely visit Newsmax but it has always been my impression that it was predominantly conservative (if not right-wing) in its content and editorial outlook. I have, apparently, been living under some delusion.
I suppose this "article" could be more disparaging of the Swiftvets, but it would be difficult. Some excerpts...
Quote: | Dirt Slinging Begins as Obama-McCain Matchup Emerges

<snip>
The 2004 presidential election between George W. Bush and John Kerry set a new standard for campaign mudslinging when the Democrat's Vietnam War record was impugned by a right-wing group called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.
Before that, during his unsuccessful primary campaign against Bush in 2000, McCain was rumored to have fathered an illegitimate black child.

Those ads will not necessarily come from official Republican quarters but from shadowy "527" groups of the Swift Boat variety, named after the section of the US tax code that governs their political activity.

I visited the Newsmax site, read the article, and then used their contact form to send the following message to their editorial staff:
I'm a long time subscriber to your newsletter. I'm also an informed follower of the activities of the ad hoc collection of honorable Vietnam Veterans who formed Swift Vets and POWs for Truth to expose the falsified military record of John Kerry during the 2004 Presidential election.
I am surprised and disappointed that Newsmax would reprint a derogatory and strongly biased piece from Agence France-Presse entitled "Dirt Slinging Begins as Obama-McCain Matchup Emerges" which mischaracterizes the Swiftboat veterans and uses the term "swiftboating" in a denegrating and completely inaccurate way. Swiftboating, as it was applied during the 2004 Presidential election, would have to be defined as "doing the job the press refuses to do in exposing the lies, deceit and fraud of self-glorifying public officials or candidates for public office who exaggerate their military service by lying about feats of heroism or combat wounds". It was employed by simply stating the truth, not smears or lies, but it has come to mean exactly what it is not.
Millions of frustrated Americans would be grateful to you if you would correct the misconception regarding the term "swiftboating" to set the record straight...which is exactly what the Swift Vets and POWs did in 2004. |
