Dear Mr. Cullen,
I read your article and decided to contact you to ask a favor. "Swiftboating", as it was applied during the 2004 Presidential election, would have to be defined as "doing the job the press refuses to do in exposing the lies, deceit and fraud of self-glorifying public officials or candidates for public office who exaggerate their military service by lying about feats of heroism or combat wounds". It was employed by simply stating the truth, not smears or lies, but it has come to mean exactly what it is not.
Millions of frustrated Americans would be grateful to you if you would correct the misconception regarding the term "swiftboating" to set the record straight...which is exactly what the Swift Vets and POWs did in 2004.
By the way, Sam Brownback is one of my Senators, but unlike the fantasy depicted in "Dick Flavin's marvelous script for 'Tip'" which you mentioned, today's politicians not only ignore the "6 O'Clock Rule", their surrogates, such as Democratunderground.com, MoveOn.org and MediaMatters.org, operate attack blogs 24/7. The SBVT were comprised of both Democrats and Republicans, John O'Neill having voted for Hubert Humphrey as a matter of fact. They were called to action by John Kerry's own arrogant "reporting for duty", and they had one goal: to expose John Kerry as "Unfit for Command". Once that goal was accomplished, they stood down. Will the Democrat 527s and other attack groups observe the "6 O'Clock Rule", or is that just a memory dramatized in a play about a bygone era?

I think it needs to be noted that the leftist media definition of "swiftboaters" has broadened considerably beyond the original organization itself and, rather cynically, now includes major supporters, including media and financial, still politically active...

I doubt he was refering to SVPT itself, but these propagandists have no need for drawing any factual distinction. |
