They're not yet done in Boston with keelhauling everyone's favourite Nantucket windsurfer, Jean Fraud...and the company he keeps...

John Kerry knows how to pick his ’friends’

Sen. John Kerry, already under fire after an ill-fated photo op on Nantucket last weekend, was hanging out that same night with a man who is facing charges that he assaulted an island construction worker and the man’s 11-year-old daughter.

Kirby Jones, 47, an island boat captain, is scheduled for a court hearing after a melee in The Club Car where he allegedly punched out 41-year-old Sean Joslin. Joslin’s young daughter was injured in the row.

Jones was one of Kerry’s two companions Saturday night and was photographed with the senator and some booze-swilling coeds on the island’s Straight Wharf.

“Sen. Kerry had no knowledge whatsoever of this incident until your phone call,” said Kerry’s spokeswoman Brigid O’Rourke. “Mr. Jones was invited to dinner by Kerim Koseatac.”

Koseatac, the other man with Kerry Saturday night, is the caretaker at the Nantucket manse owned by Kerry’s wife, ketchup heiress Teresa Heinz. But on Tuesday - before word of the assault allegations trickled to Boston - Kerry aide David Wade described both Koseatac and Jones as the senator’s “friends.”

Yesterday, not so much. It seems that Jones, a well-known character on the island, allegedly sucker-punched Joslin Thursday as he sat in The Club Car, an expensive island eatery, with his daughter and a client.

According to Joslin, he and Jones had a run-in several years ago, and when the boat captain entered the eatery, he began talking to Joslin’s daughter.

“I told him not to speak to my daughter and I moved her in between my client and me,” Joslin said.

About five minutes later, Joslin said, Kirby came flying at him from the back of the eatery.

“My client said he saw him wrap his wristwatch around his fist, he got a running start and belted me in the face. I never saw him coming. He sent my daughter flying into the bar, she hit her head. I had to get 14 stitches in my mouth.”

Joslin said a number of patrons intervened and restrained Jones until the Nantucket Police arrived.

Jones was not arrested at the scene, but according to Brian Glenny of the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s office, he will be summonsed to court for a hearing on a police application for two complaints of assault and battery.

Jones’ attorney James Merberg declined comment on the brawl, saying he hadn’t yet gotten all the information on the allegations. He also declined to put us in touch with Jones.

However, it is not the first time the two men have come to blows. According to Joslin, they got into a fight inside the Marine Home Center two years ago that resulted in Joslin being charged with assaulting Jones. He pleaded self-defense and was cleared at trial.

Joslin said the bad blood between the two stems from the fact that Jones once dated his ex-wife.

Jones has been a boat caretaker for a number of well-heeled summer residents, but O’Rourke said he has never worked for Kerry.

However, Jones was featured in a gallery of less-than-flattering photos snapped on the dock in Nantucket Saturday night.

According to Wade, Kerry was walking with Jones and Koseatac on Straight Wharf when a group of revelers on a boat asked for a picture with the senator. The resulting photo gallery - showing the ex-White House wannabe posing with a pack of college gals who are wielding cups, beer cans and straws shaped like penises - was splashed on gossip Web site TMZ.com Tuesday.

In one group shot, Jones can be seen standing next to Kerry poking his head out from behind the party-happy crowd.

So to recap: Kerry was out to dinner with a man he didn’t know was facing assault charges. After which he was photographed with a group of drinking, college-aged women with ***** straws whom he didn’t know. And no one knows how the pictures wound up on TMZ.

Perhaps the senator should just stay home....

We are known by our associations, so look no further than the man Kerry picked to be his Vice Presidential running mate in 2004, John Edwards -- selected as Father of the Year in 2007 while secretly having an extramarital affair. Scoundrels run with scoundrels, so I can't wait to see what Kerry's influence on Obama will produce as HIS running mate.
