Truly CHILLING account!
For Air Controller, Terror Still Vivid 7 Years Later
Alan Levin, USA TODAY
OBERLIN, Ohio — He spent most of his life controlling airplanes.
But on this day seven years ago, United Flight 93 was beyond control.
Cleveland Center air-traffic controller John Werth had never heard anything like it — the sounds of an animalistic struggle crackling over his radio. He heard screaming, hollering and two guttural groans coming from the cockpit.

I was an Air traffic controller for almost 40 years, (Navy and FAA and Contract), and was fortunate enough never to have lost an airplane full of people under my control. Every controller lives with that nightmare. I cannot imagine a more gut-wrenching experience.
John Werth has my sympathies and prayers for peace of mind. _________________ "In a word, I want an American character, that the powers of Europe may be convinced we act for ourselves and not for others; this, in my judgment, is the only way to be respected abroad and happy at home." --George Washington |

baldeagle,
My new son-in-law is out at the Oklahoma City FAA training center right now.
Will finish up October 1st and will come back to work in the tower.
He will probably go back for radar training in a of couple years.
But reading that article just hit me like a brick.
Dear God, to feel so helpless!! God bless John Werth. _________________ “I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. ‘Tis the business of little minds to shrink; but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death.” (Thomas Paine, 1776) |

Shawa, I, too, have a youngster carrying on the trade. My grandaughter's hubby is a 1st Lt. USMC, just completed the school at Pensacola last spring for the Air Traffic Control MOS. He (and my granddaughter and my great grandaughter) are curently serving at Iwakuni in Japan. _________________ "In a word, I want an American character, that the powers of Europe may be convinced we act for ourselves and not for others; this, in my judgment, is the only way to be respected abroad and happy at home." --George Washington |
